How do You Just Pick up And Leave?

First step is to save money. Depending on what you want to do.  If it is college. Just enroll in UNCC.

For moves outside the state like Imicus said take the least amount as possible. Also budget money for a return trip.  Nothing worse than being stuck in a place you hate.

Best thing to do is have a job in the city before you leave. Easier said than Done specially if you don't have a skill.  I would advise no less than 3000 in the bank for travel and first month expenses.

Easiest way is to join the military. But you are committed for 3-4 years going that route.

I suggest Charlotte. Not having the a ton of money your likely to have more here, it's an easier move and it's not too far from home. CPCC is one of the better community colleges in the country.

Your single, 21, no kids, not much stuff...now is the time to move.

You really seem like a perfect candidate for a four year hitch in the military.  It would provide you with the resources to further your educational and career objectives.  You'll gain many new skills and plenty of life experiences to draw from when you finally write that great novel.   A four year paid vacation courtesy of Uncle Sam.  Play your cards right and you'll have a nice little nest egg built by the time your enlistment is up.

just do it. no offense OP but i feel like you have a long history of talking about doing things here and getting all pumped up and psyched but then just never doing anything about it. this isn't meant to discourage you because i'm the same way, i'll run through an entire plan in my head but then not follow through by actually making it happen. it's something you have to train yourself to do.

my advice would be to find a community college and enroll. you need to be doing something. even if it's just GTCC and you're moving to greensboro, you're still improving your life by leaps and bounds and getting out of what sounds like a stagnant, vitality-drraining situation up in reidsville (fug that place anyway.)

good luck.

You're only speaking the truth. It's something I've always done, but I'm very serious about and my desire to get out of town grows every day. I just need to lay out a plan and execute it. Wherever I end up, CC will be one of the first things I do.

FWIW, if you're serious, my first step would be paring down all my accumulated "stuff" that I didn't really need. You could get extra cash for it, and detaching yourself from worldly things sounds like a good start for you.

As far as education goes, I'd research the hell out of scholarships, etc.

If you really want to be a writer, you need to read a lot of books. You'll also probably want to have a day job until you get your feet wet.
