Seahawks offer Wilson $21M/year but Wilson wants more

With six days to go until the artificial (but very real) deadline for pulling the plug on contract talks between the Seahawks and quarterback Russell Wilson, it’s still unclear whether a deal will get done.

The two sides have opted for silence regarding any discussions that are occurring. Word on the NFL grapevine is that the Seahawks have offered a package worth nearly $21 million per year, with significant guaranteed money. Whatever the current offer, Wilson, through agent Mark Rodgers, wants more.

The current high-water mark remains at $22 million per year, the new-money average given to Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers in 2013. The Seahawks currently don’t want to exceed that number.

You can maintain a Super Bowl contending roster while paying your stars big money. You need to draft really well and consistently well.

Noteworthy Seahawks drafted prospects 2010 - 2012: Russell Okung, Earl Thomas, Golden Tate, Walter Thurmond, Kam Chancellor, KJ Wright, Richard Sherman, Byron Maxwell, Malcolm Smith, Bruce Irvin, Bobby Wagner, Russell Wilson, Robert Turbin, Jeremy Lane, JR Sweezy

It's like our 2014 draft multiplied by 3. And the majority of these guys were on dirt cheap contracts. The Seahawks 2013 and 2014 drafts are nowhere near that caliber and I wasn't particularly impressed with their 2015 draft, besides Tyler Lockett. Combine this with stars getting paid big money and Marshawn Lynch turning 29 this year (only 1-2 years of elite play left). Seahawks will still be a force, but they won't be that overwhelmingly dominant force anymore.

The Seahawks have not drafted that well in the last two years. If they want to pay Wilson 21-22m, they're gonna have to step it up.

A house of cards.  They will have gone all 5 years post-new-CBA without taking advantage of the free gift of a 1st round talent for 5th year option.  Carpenter/Jets, Irvin/no offer, 2013/Harvin, 2014/ trade back for Paul Richardson who's worse than Corey Brown, and Graham who'll be a goner after maybe a couple seasons.  Their top pick this year is a felon who was off most boards, and they gave up draft capital equal to the #27 overall pick for Lockett.  There is open dissension with guys like Bennett and Sherman/Chancellor/Thomas are all recovering from injuries.

And we don't? Kuechly, Short, Lotulelei, Norman, Alexander, etc....

Not as soon as they do.  Theirs just ended their rookie deals and ours still have time.  The ONLY guarantee in CLT is Cam and Luke IMO.  You gotta have a drafting fool like we do with GMan.  Whiffs or off years will happen, but they've had three straight stinkers.

i like wilson a lot and i don't really blame him for wanting to get paid. i get his thought process: he wants to be compensated for what he did in the past (the superbowl INT and the 4 INT game are not indicative of his overall performances) since he was a 3rd round pick and for what he will do in the future.

BUT

turning down 21 million a year is fuging ridiculous.

I wouldn't be surprised if they let him walk. Seahawks management are not dumb dumbs

There's a big difference between us and the Seahawks regarding cap space.

We have been steadily climbing our way out of salary cap hell the past 3 years. The Seahawks have been in good cap health. We had $19M in dead money in 2014 and $12M dead money this year. The space we get back from the dead money will cover 3-4 of those guys.

It will also help big time not having to pay CJ $20M, Kalil $11.8M, and Stewart $8.3M like we have to this year. The Seahawks aren't getting that type of cap relief in the near future.

So? Cam's contract is heavily front loaded to offset that. Seattle can just back load Wilson's so they have money to pay guys right now.

Just because Hurney got drunk and threw money around doesn't mean every other team is gonna get screwed.

Like hell they can.  FYI, Sherman, Thomas, Chancellor, Wright, and Avril are already signed through 2018/2019.  All deals but Sherman's are backloaded and his cap hit the last two years of that deal will still be 13/14 per year.  Russ also wants an ungodly amount of guaranteed money.  Something has to give.  Sheer talent alone might keep them in the mix this year but football is also about chemistry and theirs feels amiss at the moment for countless reasons.  Long term, you simply cannot have 5 straight drafts with no first rounder contributing long term, three straight stinker drafts overall, and an overrated QB hell bent on breaking the bank and still expect to keep rolling.  Cannot.

No it won't, but he isn't worth that kind of money.

they won't be able to pay everyone that makes that team look so good. part of their success has been in only having to pay chump change to their quarterback and spread those millions elsewhere.

    • After 11 years with the Dallas Cowboys, defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence opted to sign a three-year deal worth a base value of $32.5 million with the Seattle Seahawks as a free agent this week.   But his words upon his arrival in the Pacific Northwest drew the ire of former teammate Micah Parsons on Thursday.   Speaking to Seahawks blogger Brian Nemhauser, Lawrence said, "A change in scenery is always good, but Dallas is my home. I made my home there, my family lives there, I'm forever going to be there. But I know for sure I'm not going to win a Super Bowl there, so yeah. We here."   That drew a response on X from Parsons, Lawrence's teammate for four years and a fellow pass rusher:   "This what rejection and envy look like! This some clown s---!" Parsons wrote.   Several members of the Cowboys organization were upset with Lawrence's comment Thursday night, sources told ESPN.
