Phil Jackson: Duke Players Fail To Live Up To Expectations In The NBA

His time with the Bulls seems so long ago now, with the Knicks closer to picking at top of the draft than the top of the standings.

At best, the Knicks would get the first pick and tab center Jahlil Okafor, although Jackson thinks he might not be aggressive enough. “Also, if you look at the guys who came to the NBA from Duke, aside from Grant Hill, which ones lived up to expectations?”

Well, let's see. Elton Brand and Luol Deng were 2 time all stars. Shane Battier won 2 NBA titles. Carlos Boozer was a 2 time all star as a 2nd round pick. Kyrie has a signature shoe from Nike, which isn't awarded to scrubs. Personally I still believe Jabari will carve out a nice career. I'm not gonna sit here and say guys like Redick, Dahntay Jones, and Dunleavy have been great, but there's something to be said for sticking on an NBA roster all theses years.

The key word is expectation here. If you didn't ever expect them to be a superstar or team leader, then you can't say they failed to live up to expectations IMO.

Green = exceed expectations

Orange = met expectations

Red = bust

--------CURRENT PLAYERS-----------

Seth Curry - came out way too early- never expected much of anything from him BUT I expected more than what he has given so far.

Loul Deng - exceeded expectations IMO. I thought he was gonna be good, but not as good as he was in Chicago. Take away a few injuries and he would be right up there with the Paul Georges and Jimmy Butlers.

Mike Dunleavy - not a flop at all in my opinion, he's a more than solid shooter. He's nothing more than a role player but did anyone expect more from him than that?

Hendo - not a bust for where he was drafted, has had his moments and definitely belongs on an NBA roster. Did anyone really think we had an allstar when we drafted him?

Rodney Hood - havent seen him enough

Kyrie Irving - Top 10 PG in the league? Nuff said

Ryan Kelly - I never expected anything from him, but you can't give him a positive grade for doing absolutely nothing.

McBob - I find it funny that outside of the few years he had here in Charlotte, he has been a bust.

Jabari Parker - need more time but probably will at least meet expectations

Mason Plumlee - he has only had 1 good season in Phoenix on a run and gun team that padded his stats.

Miles Plumlee - He was one of the only bright spots on the Nets roster for the past 2 years. I didn't think he'd be anything more than Hansborough 2.0.

JJ Redick - Top tier shooter that needed someone to help him get his shot- has done well in that role but not exceed it, IMO.

Austin Rivers - see Seth Curry (although he is turning it around in these past playoffs- "Thanks Dad!")

Kyle Singler - never expected anything from his frame in the NBA but has carved a lil niche on the teams he's been on.

--------FORMER PLAYERS-----------

Battier, Boozer, Elton Brand, Duhon, Grant Hill, Maggette, Jay Williams (injury), Sheldon Williams

McRoberts, Plumlee, Deng, Redick, Kyrie, Henderson

or

Lawson, Green, Psycho T, Ellington, Barnes and 58-year-old Vince Carter

TBH I think UNC players fail to live up to expectations at least as much. Part of the problem is every Duke/UNC/Kentucky/UConn player is supposed to be a superstar and they are not.

I think the difference between all of them are the fact that UNC has 5 Hall of Famers and the rest have 1?  Ray Allen?  I think that's why.

Do you watch basketball?  I'm honestly asking this question.  First off, Seth didn't come out way to early, he was a damn senior.  If he would've stayed at Liberty he would've became a better player.

Deng exceeded expectations I won't argue with that.

Kyrie was the first pick in the draft and he has exceeded expectations?  I'm sorry, when you're the Top pick you're suppose to be good.  And to make matters worse, he can't stay healthy so we don't know yet.

Dunleavy is a shooter and that's it.  That's fair for a fringe top 10 pick.

Hendo is what he was at Duke decent mid range shooter and get to the basket.  Can't expect a superstar at pick 12 or whatever it was.

Mason plays for the Nets, and Miles at one point in his career averaged almost 10 and 8.  He has exceeded expectations for a really late round pick.  Then again, I don't expect much out of late round picks.

The rest I won't argue with.  Jay Williams is a bust no matter what injury he had.

For every Hall of Famer, there's a shitload of Kendall Marshalls.

That's fair, there's also some solid pros in there as well.

As there are at every school I mentioned. My point here is Phil's logic is flawed at this juncture. 10 years ago, his statements would hold more truth than now. Honestly, though, I don't see high expectations coming in for most Dookies. I saw them for Brand, Boozer, Parker and Kyrie. They've all done well. I don't think Nolan Smith or the Plumlees had the level of expectations thrown on them the likes of Barnes, Zeller or Kendall Marshall.

Barnes and Marshall asked for those expectations though. Any time a guy declares early, I take it as "there's nothing more I can learn here." Marshall is a great passer and nothing else. Just a slow, old school pg. I was so disappointed when Barnes chose UNC over Duke. Probably how UNC fans felt when Ingram chose Duke.

Nope. UNC fans expected Ingram to choose Duke.

    • It must be an early Christmas for JT O'Sullivan having Thielen back so he could put a coal in Thielen's stocking every chance he gets.  Honestly, the biggest surprise is not so much the anticipation. There were those moments here and there last year as well. It's that even that one positive quality he had seemingly vanished his first two games to where it looked like it was all but over, only for it to start coming back some until you get exclamation points all over this game film. And some of those throws were under a lot of duress, something I feel is something new. Finally, those deeper shots are starting to land. Not all of them, but enough that defenses may have to start respecting them. No guarantees whether this will end up as more of anomaly but I certainly hope it isn't. The Green Bay game was a sampler of what BY could be. Against KC, we got a meal. If we could start getting these meals regularly, we might actually have something to work with here.

    • Heels let another team go up 20 on them but this time they complete the comeback. HD never seems to have his team ready but he makes great halftime adjustments. Powell played the majority of the second half and his defense was the difference along with his big three pointer to give the Heels the lead for good. Trimble and Davis were also spectacular. Carolina can’t let Auburn get out to a 20 point lead though, they won’t be able to come back from that.
