We were fishing about 40 miles offshore off Oregon Inlet...  It was us and about 3-4 miles away was another fishing vessel...  All of the sudden F16 flies maybe 40 feet above our heads and does crazy poo... Does loop and flies above the other boat...  Right after he passed our boat he turned on afterburners...  Then he just took off straight up at around 75* angle...  Scared the poo out of us.  Imaging drinking beer in the middle of a fuging ocean... relaxed... and the next thing you see is F16 above your head and extremely load noise of afterburners...  Almost poo my pants.

There is nothing I've ever experienced as the earth shattering sound of a fighter jet up close. It's an impossible noise that seems otherworldly.

Growing up, I used to go fishing out in the Delaware Bay and Dover Air Force Base was just on the other side. All kinds of fighter jets and bombers would fly over all day long. It was cool to watch. 

One day, a fighter jet broke the sound barrier over the bay creating a sonic boom that was unlike anything I have ever heard/felt. A guy fishing close to us died of a heart attack and his wife went after the Air Force for it. Not sure what ever came of it though.

there's a little lake in Northern Alberta called Christina Lake and it's right at the northern edge of the Cold Lake air base...we had a private show like this a few years back and it was awesome...all kinds of planes coming over at low altitude and high speed.

Along time ago when a Jet fighter pilot from our squadron was being reassigned to the Koren field of battle he would buzz our airbase that way. If you were working on the flight line and not looking around it would literally scare the hell out of you. What were they going to do to the pilot? ground him and not send him to Korea? So.. it was overlooked.

A jet fighter broke the sound barrier over an old country farm house I used to live in as a kid in the NC mountains. It sounded like a fuging bomb went off, the house about rattled itself to the ground.

I had a submarine surface about half a mile from us, while fishing off the coast around Jacksonville, NC a while back. that was crazy. It felt like someone had pulled a drain out the bottom of the ocean. Never noticed when it went back under though.
