self-representing in court

PhillyB

Recommended Posts

Take this with a grain of salt, but I was pulled over 3 years ago for speeding, ticketed, and then told to show up for a court date. The day of my court date, there was a blizzard and I didn't go. I eventually forget about it. I've been pulled over 3 times since with nothing showing up on my record (heavy foot). I called the DMV, and they have nothing. I called the city where it happened and apparently my license is suspended, but only in that county (don't live anywhere near there) and the account is in collections (never going to pay it).

Lawyer will cost @ $250-$500 - They'll essentially get it put off with improper equipment

Represent yourself and getting the initial charge reduced to improper equipment and the rest of the stuff dismissed will cost @ $15-$225... It'll vary a bit depending on how exactly they handle the charges (outright dismissal or improper equipment with court costs)

I forgot to add to my previous post that if your DA/prosecutor is very very resistant to wanting to work with you, it'll just be better to ask for a continuance and get pay an attorney to get you off the hook.

TBQH, it won't look good with you missing the initial court date, but you did show an effort to make amends by going to the jail, etc.

If I had to guess, you are looking at paying closer to the $225 when all is said and done. It all really depends on who is working the line that day, and how willing they are to work with you.

I had a higher standard for you than that abysmal headline.

Anyway, show up with your license, and they'll probably dismiss that charge.  Show proof that you got your headlight fixed, and they'll probably dismiss that, too.  Where a tie.  Enjoy the rest of your day.

On the bright side, if you do indeed get put in the slammer, you can split it up to serve only weekends.  You can spin it as community service.

Where's all this taking place?

this is what i'm hoping to avoid, if possible. i just need to know if jails are full of people who thought self-representation for minor traffic offenses was a good idea.

Logically they would not be. When taking into consideration what they do to people that smoke pot...you may be boned

Would it be considered proof to drive you car to the clerks desk for visual inspection?

My wife almost got arrested...  She cause a bad car wreck and was charged with wreckless driving, speeding, damage to government property and few other things... I came on huddle and like 3 dudes recommended the same lawyer... Told my wife, she called him... 1 month later everything was waved.  She paid $200.

Show up with your license and you'll be golden in Guilford. They regularly give people written promises to appear on low level felony arrests so they have bigger fish to fry than your dwlr
