Hardy sentence reduced, we're getting a comp pick

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but this is currently correct.  I have the Panthers gaining as many UFAs as they lost, which would only give them a net-value 7th that's way below the 32 pick limit:

In order for the Panthers to get a 3rd for Hardy, they'd have to cut at least one of their UFAs gained before Week 10 (Charles Tillman, Kurt Coleman, Jason Trusnik).  And there's a good chance that James Dockery won't qualify in their favor, and if so that means two of those three would have to go.  As it stands right now I would not be counting on the Panthers to get any comp picks for 2016.

i could see trusnik and coleman getting cut possibly. sucks that its based on the number of qualifying UFAs and not the value of the UFAs. we lost 12.25 million in value and only gained 3.95 million back, losing almost 8.3 million in value. should get a least a 3rd rounder for that loss in value.

Nobody can see that far into the future. He could have that much left in him, but it's more likely that he doesn't.

not trying to start a huddle war or anything but man you skirt the edges of being a fan of the Panthers and not.

There is zero info to think CJ is falling off anytime soon.  Dude averages 10.5 sacks per year over the last 5 and that includes being injured on a leg whip among other things.

What are you talking about? I never said he'd fall off. 4-6 years is not soon either. I'm not going to randomly assume that CJ will still be "elite" in his mid 30s. Most players don't play as well in their 30s as in their mid 20s. That's nature. Of course I want us to keep him and want him to be "elite" for the next 6 years, but that's not entirely likely based on what the past has shown us. Unfortunately, I'm not entirely sure we even re-sign him after his current deal. I can be a fan and it'll be reasonable.

Here's the thing.  It actually is.  From the very article linked:

Please note that this chart does not include potential “net-value” compensatory picks for teams that lose and gain an equal amount of UFAs, nor does it account for compensatory picks that may not be awarded due to falling below the 32-pick limit or exceeding the maximum of four per team.

FA's lost and gained DO NOT cancel each other out on a one for one basis.

If you read the actual methodology behind the article he states that if a team has a net value loss they are still eligible for a compensatory pick but those are always placed at the end of the 7th round after the regular compensatory picks.  More times then not those fall outside of the top 32 picks.  A net value loss is when a team loses and gains the same number of players but the value of those players lost is greater than those gained.

On this page you will see he has us being awarded a compensatory pick but it not showing up in the top 32.

Under your assumption a team could lose one $12m player and gain 3 $2m players and they would be awarded a compensatory pick.  I have yet to see that situation actually play out in the past.  Hopefully I am wrong.

As Orange Habit has said before we currently have 3 players lost and 3 players gained.  Of those players lost James Dockery has a really low annual salary and therefore there is a very good chance he won't qualify unless he plays a considerable amount of snaps.  So in reality we are probably looking at only 2 players lost and that is if Bell makes his team.

If Hardy, Bell, and Dockery all qualify we would need one of Tillman, Coleman, and Trusnik to not make the team in order to get a compensatory pick.

If Dockery doesn't qualify then we would need 2 of them to not make the team.

These scenarios could factory into the final 53man roster.  For example lets assume Dockery doesn't qualify and Trusnik doesn't make the team.  At this point we would have 2 gained and 2 lost.  At this point keeping a player like Chris Houston instead of Tillman could result in an extra 3rd or 4th rounder.

Houston and a 4th rounder or Tillman is an entirely different decision for the front office than just Houston or Tillman.

The same type of situation could play out for Coleman.
