Morons vs Geniuses

Greg Cosell is a very sharp mind, and he also does his homework and does his best to come to conclusions based on somewhat concrete film analysis.

There are a lot of dolts on espn that just spew out the current talking points and that is lazy uninformed journalism.

Recent post after a tweet by Gil Brandt said Cam Newton could be as successful as Aaron Rodgers in the right situation...

Another post, after Brandt said he doesn't see the Panthers making the Super Bowl this year...

Now to be clear, these two posts were not made by the same person, but they highlight a trend around here of deciding which analysts know what they're talking about based on their most recent opinion of the Panthers.  To be totally frank, an opinion of someone's football knowledge based on whether the last thing they said about the Panthers was positive or not is a weakly formed and poorly thought out opinion, especially when you've previously said the opposite.

So I'm gonna challenge folks to do a little bit of objective analysis.

Tell me which analysts / writers / commentators / whatever you think truly know football and generally give informed, well thought out opinions.

Likewise, tell me which ones are consistently poor and hardly worth listening to.

In both cases, tell me why, and you need to give me something better than whether or not they like the Panthers or their players.

So you tell me: In the world of football media, who are the geniuses and who are the morons?

Geniuses are the ones that recognize that the Panthers and all our players are great.

The morons are everyone else.

So one day a guy may be a genius, the next he may be a moron.  Then sometimes he may be a genius again.  Just depends on what he is saying about the Panthers at the moment (and my other sports teams)

Of course.

I think they call this 'The Theismann Effect'.

Cosell, Brandt, Riddick, Kirwan.

Off the top of my head, those are the opinions that I will value.  For some reason, I will also look at Brooks' stuff too.

Of course I'm forgetting someone, but the rest I can do without.  Dilfer every once in a while has a good viewpoint.

Geniuses can make a rare stoopid comment, but that doesn't turn them into morons.sad times when someone makes a comment these days and a group of disagree then perseed to destroy the person. Words have always been powerful than weapons, now there nukes.

Ross Tucker - Genius

King - Moron

I think Dr Z said it best on when he knew he wanted to be a full time football writer: "When I stepped into the press room at a game for the first time". "Because of the knowledge in the room? ". "No, because I realized noone in the room knew anything about football".

    • I would understand it--especially if DJ Johnson, Barno, and Wonnum finish strong.  Graham, however, might not be the best fit for Carolina with Brown back.  Our DTs have underperformed (Tuttle, Robinson) and they can be cut and save about $13m, or one can be cut and save $6.5m.  Who might be a better fit than Graham?   Maybe the guy beside him--Graham's sidekick, Kenneth Grant, is also a beast.  You could argue that he benefited by playing with Graham, just as he would in Carolina beside Brown.  However, teams like to double the big NT/3 tech, and if you do that, you get Browned.  Grant is a 340 lb DT who has 3 sacks this year--against Ohio State, Saturday, he had 5 QB pressures--and he has been doing that all year.  They could not block him.  If you want a player who compliments Brown (as opposed to rotating in with him) I would take a long look at Grant--in round two if he is there--after drafting an Edge in round 1.  In my view, THAT would solve the running game issues and give us pocket collapsing pressure up the A gap.  There is also a DT from Kentucky I like in this role, but Graham is good.
    • He is a free agent after this season. Do you want to pay him like a top kicker?  He can't kick much from past 50 yards.
    • I don't know how anybody watches this team this season and has this take.  We are miles better than we were week 1.    If we were slightly better he would be in serious contention for coach of the year, and he should be. My only concern right now is that we win too much and lose draft position to get even better.
