Aside from a malfunction I don't understand how you get hurt with fireworks. I've been "impaired" many times and yet still managed to operate very dangerous fireworks safely. I guess even in my impaired state I recognize the importance of safety. Maybe it's Army training but it always seemed like common sense. Exact same thing with guns. Safety is obvious and always make sure the weapon is clear. Stupid people do stupid things.

I can understand why you don't get it.  Anyone who uses the words impaired and safety in the same sentence as if being impaired doesn't negatively impact safety is just an accident waiting to happen.  What you have been is lucky.

Firing off fireworks while impaired is pretty stupid. And one of the first things that goes when you are impaired is your ability to accurately assess the situation and determine whether you are acting in a safe and rational manner.

I understand what you're saying and agree to a point. I've never been so impaired that my regard for safety went completely out the window and I would hold a live firework in my hand. Perhaps I would have an abundance of safety precautions because I knew I would be impaired. Almost as a backstop against myself. I've never had a few beers and said "watch this". It's just not in my nature. Aside from a sparkler, I've never held a lit firework. And never would regardless of my level of impairment. But you are right. Impairment is exactly that. But a healthy respect for the danger allows one to plan and exercise caution...even when impaired.

I feel bad for the kid.  He went to my high school and as a much younger kid he would walk up to my house and ask to play basketball in my driveway.  (We had a goal and he didnt)  Very very nice young man.  His parents worked very hard to raise him with manners and respect for others.

Obviously you had to have some wits about you or we would have been reading about your accident as well.  And as you infer impairment is relative.  A few beers over time wont impair you at least legally but obviously the more you drink the less rational you are and the more you become 10 feet tall and bulletproof.

I've made plenty of stupid decisions over the years. Some completely sober. I'm not that bright. But I can't say that I've ever made a mistake or misjudgment about fireworks or firearms. I really think it is the Army training and the overabundance of caution used when doing dangerous things. Granted not all Soldiers get the message and things happen all the time. So I guess I can understand how this happens when people just don't have that beaten in to them or have that much common sense.

We used to make bottle rocket guns out of PVC pipes and have bottle rocket wars. Not the brightest thing to do, but damn was it fun.

 

We would go to the old high school baseball practice fields, and each have a field with a "flag" on the pitcher's mound. One team would always have 1 or two people hiding in the dugouts with roman candles as a last line of defense. No one ever got hurt (Thank God).

I never did find out which fingers he lost, or even which hand. I imagine that could make a big difference in his prospects to return.
