Jason Whitlock on PTI: Who compares to Jack Lambert? Luke

Recommended Posts

Olsen was on the radio yesterday and commented on this out of nowhere (he was not asked). Luke's position is more important to the defense than Watt's. MLB is involved in more plays and cannot really be avoided. He said you can run away from Watt, you can avoid throwing near Revis but you cannot avoid Luke. I would not trade him for any defensive player. I probably wouldn't trade him for any player period since I'm happy with Cam.

I agree that Luke can impact more plays, but he cannot change a defensive plan as much as JJ can.  We haven't seen a player like him since Reggie White.  Fast, big, strong, high motor....

JJ can completely change the way that you have to play offense, and while I agree that Luke can somewhat do that, it's not quite as glaring.

That's a fair point. I guess in the end, I'm just glad we have the best guy in the league at a position group...who is also ridiculously young. I don't think many would argue that the best 3 defensive players at each tier is JJ Watt on the line, Luke in the middle and Revis on the outside (there's some room for argument in the defensive backfield). So for us to have one of those 3 guys is pretty special.

Watt was ranked number 1 for a reason.

"Splash" stats. Touchdowns, interceptions, forced fumbles, recoveries, sacks. Also his persona and he is way out there in the media. It's voted on by players, not GMs.

Luke's not as vicious as Lambert.  I think level of play is comparable, as is competitiveness and toughness.  But Jack Lambert was a mean SOB whose style of play would draw lots of flags in today's NFL.  To me, not a good comparison.

I gotta disagree here.

Luke may not talk as vicious as Lambert did but does he play and hit as vicious as Lambert?  absolutely.

And although this may be a product of the eras they played in, Luke is more athletic than Lambert ever was.

How do you game plan for the Middle Linebacker?   Run outside.... NOPE... He'll get there.   You could throw over the top that might work.  Run right at him.  Not a good idea.

Watts double team him, run opposite side of the field.....Quick hitters...  You can game plan for Watts but you can't game plan of Luke cause he is EVERYWHERE....

I love Watts, he is a great player but Luke is just as bad.    I think Watts plays are more highlight reel stuff compared to Luke.  But when that RB flies out of the backfield on 3rd down and catches a ball and Luke Nails him for a minimal to no game and they gotta punt.  That's a game changer.  When that RB is breaking for daylight and he comes off his feet.  Luke just nailed him again.  That's a game changer.

Best Part.   Really nothing you can to do to stop him.
