Look at the owner who originally acquired, and named the team the Redskins, George Preston Marshall. He was known as one of the biggest racists in the NFL, who flat out refused to have black players on his team for well over a decade until his hand was finally forced in 1962 when Robert Kennedy threatened to revoke the lease on the stadium. Even when he finally agreed, the first black player the franchise drafted immediately demanded a trade, refusing to play for a blatantly racist owner.

That's the legacy Dan Snyder is protecting? What a shitheel.

And that's great, but if you're going to do that you need to understand the backlash you're going to receive as a result. That's all this is.

You can't just keep the offensive name and then get upset that folks think it's offensive when the whole term "Redskin" was created to be a derogatory term in the first place!

Maybe you should do a little research and learn where the term redskin came from and the context in which it was used. It's as much of a slur as n****r.

All speech shouldn't be protected. Things that could create a riot or loss of life. Yelling bomb in a crowded place,calling some one a derogatory name could result in someone getting shot or hurt badly. All free speech isn't good free speech.

perhaps so, but if a name is patently offensive - that is, the name itself is derived from something that is intrinsically, endemically rooted in something that makes us sick - then it should go even if it's only offensive to a small number of people. even if only 5% of people were offended at the name "Nashville N*****s" that five percent would have a great case to change it, because n*****s is a patently offensive term.

Actually, I'm perfectly comfortable taking backlash for standing up for free speech. and I'm not upset that people find it offensive. They wouldnt be upset if I found something they do or say offensive

This seems simple, imagine that i have the god given right to just come in your wife's face and call her every derogatory name in the book just because hey it's free speech and you can do nothing about it. You could end up hurting me,or your wife could become depressed and kill herself. All free speech isn't good free speech.
