Anybody familiar with the Hickory area?

I'm in the final stages of applying to Grad schools and Lenoir Rhyne is one of my 'safety' schools. My family lives in Eastern Carolina so I would be closer than I am now, but not so close where they can just drop by anytime they wanted. I've always wanted to live 'near' Charlotte. What is the cost of living? I'm guessing it's dirt cheap. Any advice would be awesome.

I just moved from there. I lived in and around hickory the last 5 years. There are some great parks, a minor league team and a movie theater.
