starting a bar

i've debated a couple of options. one is to simply not deal with liquor and just go for broke on craft beers and keep a decent wine selection. another is to move a lot of food but simplify the menu to cut down on supply costs and cater to a specific demographic of bar-goers (a potato skins and chicken fingers bar food crowd rather than a caviar crowd.

greensboro is booming and has a serious lack in good panthers sports bars. i wouldn't make it exclusively a sports bar but i don't think i'd have a problem drawing a crowd on sundays. i've been to countless kickass little bars in other countries that would blow the competition away here that are inspiring me.

rent for a halfway decent spot here is ~15/sqft/year, which is pretty damn decent. startup costs can be minimized if you know what you're doing.

If you're going to go with the crafted beers I think you are probably going to go with a little more upscale for food. When I'm drinking a quality beer and not piss water like bud light, I prefer a sandwich like a cuban with some homemade potato chips. People that are willing to pay $6 bucks a beer won't care about $12 bucks for a sandwich or some skewers. Just my $.02.

If you are able, figure out a way to share other space with a start up etc to offset rent. It wouldn't interfere with what either of you do but it space co op basically.

unlikely... i need 1200-2000 square feet, but with a bar setup there's really no way to do anything else with it

Not in NC...

The laws that require the majority of your net income comes from food submarine any bar before it gets off the ground.

Move out here to Denver and Ill be a regular.

Any bar better have someone backside making great appetizers, sammies and BBQ etc.

You want people to stay, have fun and drink?

Give 'em a reason.

Big screen TVs ain't enough.

Man I would love to put a menu together for a bar........

i think it's in boston. bunch of hot-ass bartenders greet you at the door like HEY fugER WHAT THE fug DO YOU WANT and then the staff freaks out and calls you a fuging ***** no matter what you order and insult every time they come to your table. the bartenders make fun of you mercilessly. it's probably the type of place you only go to once just for the novelty value

I go to the one in Myrtle Beach whenever I'm there. It's more fun if you give it right back to them, then they take the gloves off.

My stepson went to a bar in Nebraska that had no bartenders. Just shot dispensers. You put money on a card, went around and picked whatever you wanted. They only had wine and shots, though.

That's like the Asheville Pour Taproom, which is the largest self-pour bar in the world... http://www.pourtaproom.com/
