5) Sean McDermott, Carolina Panthers

 

The Panthers' defensive showing over the past few seasons has not only repaired McDermott's reputation as a bright football mind, but it has fueled speculation that he could be in line for a head-coaching job in the near future. As a disciple of the late Jim Johnson, McDermott favors an aggressive scheme, but he has become an excellent situational play caller during his time in Carolina. He will attack opponents with creative double A-gap blitzes or fall back into conservative zone coverage in optimal situations. Known for his exceptional game planning and teaching methods, McDermott has earned strong reviews of late for helping the Panthers' defense get back on track despite playing a number of young players in key roles along the defensive line and secondary. With the unit expected to dominate the NFC South with a more experienced lineup on the field, the Panthers' defensive coordinator could shoot up the charts when this list is compiled next season.

Always hard to pinpoint exactly how much credit a coordinator deserves when the HC has a successful pedigree on the same side of the ball, but no doubt that McD has done a very solid job.  

Agree completely with the comments about playcalling, though some might knock him for the blitzes against Seattle.

I'm sure he's learned a lot from Rivera, but I believe Rivera let's him have the reigns for the most part.  He has too many other things to worry about as a HC.  That's the only thing that bugs me about a lot of people, when our defense is struggling.  The blame goes directly to Rivera.  Only if good things are happening, does McDermott get mentioned.

One thing I just realized is that I'm not constantly going "Why did you call THAT play in that situation" anymore on the defensive side of the ball (that's strictly reserved for Shula). When the defense did poorly last year it was usually due to a blown assignment or a player getting beat. The scheme was solid for what he had to work with, the players at times were not. 

Glad we have him.

Is there anyone on the team that might be promoted if McD got a HC job somewhere else?

Steve Wilks was who Rivera wanted in the first place.

The Chargers denied his interview request since Wilks was still under contract.  That contract expired the following year though and Wilks found his way here, although as DB coach rather than DC.

I'm not big on McDermott to be honest. I still feel as if this is Ron's defense. I see the Jim Johnson influence on the field but the belief I have is Sean inherited this defense. His job? Learn, maintain and don't screw up.

Wilks, however, could be a different story.

how could he inherit the defense if he was here since day 1?
