To be fair, Boston has absolutely owned the sports world this millennium. If any fan base has a right and/or reason to be cocky and arrogant, it's Boston. They have a team in all 6 US major pro sports leagues and 5 of the 6 have won a championship since 2000. They have won 10 world championships since 2000 (4x NFL, 3x MLB, 1x NBA, 1x NHL, 1x MLL). Their MLS team is the only one that hasn't won a championship, but they've still been incredibly successful and have played in the MLS Championship Match 5x since 2000.

Believe me I know. I live in New England, and am a big Red Sox and Celtics fan (not really into hockey or lacrosse). I'm just saying that the majority of New Englanders that are older than 40-50 are usually Giants fans because the Pats were terrible before the 2000s.

No fanbase has the right to be cocky or arrogant because the fans have nothing to do with winning or losing championships.  That falls to the players or coaches.  I can understand being happy about a title win as a fan, but one should never be arrogant about success that others have earned.

The Celtics weren't laughing stocks after the Bird years, in fact they were a regular playoff contender but always ended up short of the Finals until KG, Allen, and Pierce were teamed together. There was a stretch of terrible years (94-01, even though they made the playoffs one year with a 35-47 record)

Similarly, the Red Sox had a stretch of horrible years (1920-37, '61-66) but for the most part alternated between mediocre and decent (2nd and 3rd place). The 80s and 90s had a few playoff trips that ended without a WS (though they should have won in 86) and then the 2000s which has been wildly successful.

I wouldn't compare the Patriots terrible past record with the spotty yet okay previous record of the Celts and Sox. And I would say that Boston has been a decent sports market for a long time, certainly when you compare with the tons of cities that are in the middle of 25+ year title droughts.
