True Detective Season Two

I think it's the writing.  Vaughn has done a good job imo, but the writing makes the character kind of... idk, stiff is the best word I can come up with.  I think better writing would have put his character up there with the main characters from season 1, but I think they came up short there.

A certain part of the general feeling about this season was the unattainable level that season 1 set... but that's not all of it.  It's also not just that it's different characters and a different story, it's simply that the show isn't as good, which in all honesty is probably what we should have all expected.  Season 1 of TD was simply so outrageously great that a let down was inevitable.  I am enjoying it and will continue to watch to the end however.

While the writer is the same, the writing is not the same. If that makes sense. And perhaps having a different director is making all the difference in the world. Directors are often overlooked as the driver of everything in any movie or show.

I died when he told the Chinese dude to stand in front of tank.

I think Frank tries to embody the wise-cracking, clever mobster archetype and sometimes he hits (see above) sometimes he misses.

A miss would be the "blue balls of the heart" comment. But it feels real because that seems like the kind of thing you might look at as clever and poignant in the moment, then regret it as soon as the statement leaves your mouth. I think the look on Ray and Frank's face after he said it backs me up that it wasn't supposed to be a good line.

I personally like that not everything he says is clever and doesn't hit the way he wants it to when it initially comes into his head.

I was digging tonight's Twin Peaks feel.

Totally.  Last night was One Eyed Jacks with Audrey sneaking in under cover, Cooper rescuing her.  Also, her visions totally reminded me of Bob.  The car getaway was even Mulholland Drive-esque.  This season is trying really hard to be Lynchian.  From the Farrell-Vaughn bar-lounge singer scenes to this past episode.  I think a big approach of this season was to be an ode to Lynch.  They've done it ok in my opinion.  Some hits, some misses.

Ugh, I'm sorry guys... That episode kind of did it for me... I'm gonna watch the last two but it wasn't good imo. Just everything... The writing... The acting, the plot and that horrible 80s show music during the party... No clue where this show is going. So disappointed...

I'll agree I didn't care for the sex party crap.

Can you say

Only thing missing was the masks.

Still very interested on where this thing they spent way too much time on leads.

Just finished the episode. First thought is its the weakest episode so far. I get the Lynch vibe, but it's just so out of place. I noticed this episode was the first I've seen with a co-writer as well.

One part in particular was sloppy as fug. They kept showing the bus on the way to the party, and then the establishing shot outside the mansion, and it was clearly dusk or early morning. But then they cut to outside the mansion and its dark out and the moon is full. Just horrible editing and incredibly uncharacteristic of the series.

The episode wasn't terrible, it had some good moments.

I'm looking forward to the next episodes, and hoping its a different director than the one that did this.

My personal opinion is that the characters aren't strong or complex enough to pull off the Lynch-style.  The show seems to be playing a fine line between giving ode versus attempting to replicate a style.  Twin Peaks is one of my favorite shows and the emulation almost seems forced at times especially when the characters have one vibe: brooding.

I caught the night/dusk/night thing too...
