True Detective Season Two

I like this season a lot so far. Really strong acting from all the main players, and the mood and story is still dark as hell.

People just need to let go of season one. The biggest flaw of the series so far has been season one being too damn good.

I think this may have nailed it. Season 1 overshadows MOST tv shows ever so Season 2 is sort of damned right from the jump. That being said, there seems to be less focus this season. The first season was simple in a way. Bad guy out there killing girls with crazy pagan religion back drop. Caught and killed...wait...cover up? Still killing...get bad guy.

This season has been more frenetic in it's plot development and character reveal. Not that I don't understand what's happening but that there is a beauty to simplicity when well done. And this does seem a little forced. I can't quite put my finger on it but it's like there are too many characters and too many angles/story lines/motivations to make it a smooth story telling.

I still like it and will continue to watch.

Somebody said it last night on twitter and it makes the most sense of how I currently feel about season two so far...

It's like they're trying too hard.  Some of the dialogue feels forced.  I'm still in it for the long haul and some of the stuff at the end of last nights episode was very nice, but... something just feels off so far.

I think the dialog in season one was pretty bad at times too.   They closed that season off so well that it makes everyone forget the mid season episodes when Matthew mcconaughey was so over the top it was ridiculous.  So far I would say the seasons are about the same for me quality wise.

This. I haven't watched any of season 2 yet, it's on the DVR for future binge viewing.

But Matt was a bit much thru the middle episodes last season, almost as over the top as those stupid Lincoln commercials he's doing for whatever-the-fugging reason. And "A Cool, Dry Place" was a pretty decent dramatic effort from a much younger Vaughn in 1998. I remember channel surfing and ended up watching it because it wasn't one of his usual comedies.

And, for the record, "Be Cool" was a very underrated role for him.

This story is really hard to follow. My wife doesn't even completely follow the story, and she usually explains everything we watch together to me.

Hopefully it starts tieing together a little bit better. I honestly am going to force myself to watch it on Sunday.  I keep telling myself i am in it u too the end, but I am having doubts.

I'll try and summarize what I can figure so far. Let me know what you're having trouble following, I think this poo is interesting.

Vince Vaughn is a former criminal boss trying to be legit, when he is screwed out of a real estate deal after guy is killed in episode one.

Collin Ferrel is cop that went shady when his wife was raped and he went vigilante with the help of then criminal boss Vaughn. He made it to detective in the corrupt city of Vinci while still doing jobs for Vaughn.

Rachel McAdams is an honest city cop with daddy issues.

Taylor Klistch is a California Highway Patrol cop, military vet with PTSD struggling with his sexuality. He appears to be a good cop obsessed with his work.

Obviously all three cops are now working together to solve the murder from episode one, each weary of one another's ulterior  motives.

Vaughn is now getting fully back into the underworld since someone appears to be coming after him. Also, Vaughn lost mucho dinero in that real estate deal gone bad. I suspect poo is about to hit the fan next episode. Also, the mayor of Vinci is crooked as all get out.

This.

I can understand the frustrations with some of the sequencing this season. It seems like they kind of came out of the gate swinging but have been on slow descent the past two episodes. I'm hoping they start building more this week. The car fire last week showed signs of things picking up.

I actually fell asleep in the middle of this past week's episode and had to go back and watch the second half again, but when I did, I found it a lot better than the first half. So maybe that's a good sign.

The part where Kitsch and Vaughn exchange mean stares in the club might have been my favorite part of the episode. I think that was foreshadowing some major violence that will go down between the two parties. Something tells me Kitsch is going to go all commando on Vaughn's crew at some point.

I read a theory that Frank Semyon's right hand man, the red head, might be the guy who actually raped Velcoro's wife. That would be a pretty ingenious, evil con. You get an enraged cop to kill off one of your enemies that you finger for the rape, then you have something to hold over him to make him do your dirty work.
