Wilks: Norman on verge of becoming a top corner

Per S.Reed in article from the Miami Herald.  Wilks says that Norman has just barely tapped into his potential and predicts he will be one of the top corners in this league shortly. Hope Getts uses some of that cap money he has (I believe close to 15 millon after the Davis deal) to nail down Norman this year. One of the most important extensions that we can pursue. If anyone cares to post article then do so.....pain in the ass to do from this phone

"He started 12 games as a rookie before being benched following a 27-21 loss at Kansas City in which he surrendered two touchdown passes. It took a while for coaches to regain confidence in Norman, and he rarely played at all during his second season in Carolina.

He'd bounce back last season, recovering from an early season concussion to become a full-time starter again, this time drawing the opponent's best receiver on a weekly basis.

He helped limit Maclin to three catches for 38 yards and no touchdown and Jones to six catches for 59 yards and no TDs in back-to-back weeks. In a rematch with Jones in Week 17, Norman limited the Falcons star to four catches for 58 yards to help the Panthers clinch the NFC South"

Anyone else starting to get a bit worried about all the accolades Norman is getting this offseason?  I mean I was as stoked as anyone to see him start playing to his potential last year, but we don't know how he'll react to being expected to play well.  To this point in his career he's always been fighting an uphill battle.  Now that he got to the hilltop and is our undisputed #1 corner...are we gonna get the same Norman that played with a chip on his shoulder?  I certainly hope so, but I'm starting to get a bit worried.

Why would you be worried? Has he shown that he doesn't have a work ethic? I mean just because you get praised doesn't mean you stop working hard at your job does it?

The thing is, if Norman is willing to sign an extension this offseason the Panthers should jump all over it.  It'd be a bargain compared to what he'll get if he does have the breakout year most expect him to have.

I can't say I understand your perspective.  What accolades has he received?  If you mean love from coaches and fans, then I really don't consider those accolades.  I consider DPOY or All Pro as accolades, so in my estimation he hasn't reached any sort of hilltop.  He has a ton of competition on the field.  I'm sure that will push him to keep improving with guys like Bene and Peanut Tillman on the roster.  I don't think Norman wants the pain of being the doghouse again.

I want to see Norman do it a little longer. Wouldn't be opposed to extending I'm during the season to see how he's playing.

I understand the hesitation that some have to not throwing money at this guy.

However, having met, spoken to at length, and having just hung out with him in a social setting, there is zero reason not to extend him now.  The guy has it all.  Cool and calm off the field and hell on wheels on it.  He is quickly becoming one of my favorites to watch.  Pay that man.

I may need a larger studio for next year's draft party.

Whether Norman is or isn't may be the story, but they underlying story, to me, is the financial shape we are in.  How many teams could sign a franchise qb, sign a key OLB, etc. and still have enough in the wallet to EASILY extend a top CB?

Extend this man quickly ...the longer we wait the higher the price goes. It may be difficult as he's in his late 20's and still balling on his rookie contract (+ escalators).. obviously his agent will fight for his financial security. I'd HATE to see him as a Patriot, Bear, Cowboy or even in our division...  Would love to see whats being planned behind the scenes in regards to Norman. I think his freelancing will be at a minimum after seeing the respect he's been getting around the league while sticking to his assignments this past year. You can tell the defense has trust in one another.

Norman, Bene, Tillman, Houston, White, Byndom .... loving our sudden depth at corner.
