NFL on ESPN: C.Johnson NFL most over paid player

He was nonexistent last season

For the first four games, sure. In my opinion, that's almost entirely attributable to the leg whip he took in New England. In the nine games before the leg whip, he had 9.5 sacks. In the nine games after it (5 in 2013 and 4 in 2014), he had 2.5. He came back the last 14 games (counting playoffs) of this season, though, and had 10.5 sacks.

He is actually making 10 million dollars in 2015. His cap hit is 20 million. The other 10 million he got in signing bonus in 2011 and in restructuring bonuses in later years to help the team get under the cap.  But he got that money whether he played this year or not. So on a cap basis he is overpaid but not based on his salary for 2015,

How much of those were empty stats sacks when we were getting blown out? I don't remember Johnson totally reeking havoc any specific game. FYI every player plays with injuries that's not a good excuse.

We've got a couple more still on the team.

stew is the other big one, but if he stays healthy this year he'll be one of the biggest offensive playmakers. his cap hit is also easier to deal with iirc. we can't do much about CJ.

How much of Kelvin's, Cam's, Greg's, Luke's, or TD's stats came when Carolina was getting blown out?  Your argument is irrelevant and inaccurate, particularly since teams run the ball when they're winning big... nobody on the losing side is getting sacks when they're down by 21.

you actually felt Cams and Kelvins impact in the game. Meanwhile our pass rush was non existent the majority of the season and I can find threads about people here complaining about the pass rush 10 weeks into the season

We lost one of our best pass rushers, with his backup on the weed list.  We were playing Ealy, a rookie, and still were almost top 10 in the league in sacks.

Unfortunately, we weren't close to the year before, but that was an anomaly.

So not having an pro bowl DE on the other side is an excuse for being non existent? Someonee tell Watt that he didn't get the memo.

Hurney gave him 20 million more than the next team bidding could even afford. There was no negotiation, Hurney just slapped down this ridiculous contract and CJ signed it immediately. Him and his agent's response was basically "wow".

So yeah, this was a terrible deal for the team from day 1.

lol @ anyone that thinks he isn't vastly overpaid. this will be the last of the hurney blunders that we have to maneuver around.

I believe that "Vastly" is a tad harsh. Damm near impossible for anyone to live up to that contract. He's had a rather impressive run, and a few more years in the tank. Let's hope Gman can keep the magic going with CJ.

Even with Hardy gone, Alexander gone, and CJ/Star playing hurt. We did manage to lead the league (I think.) with 70 +/-3% Pressures. You know Pressures? Sacks little brother. He can disrupt a play here and there, and may even cause a TO once in a while. If, he could develop some level of consistency, he could be tough to defend. Man, it always appears as though he is mere inches from making a huge impact.

n/m Like I tell the wife all the time. I have no opinion.

Hurndog saw a possibility that CJ could leave. He didn't want to get into a bidding war, and he wanted to show CJ he had his back. Armed with JRs check book, he wrote TEH check. TEH check that for all intents and purposes, considering the results, set us back for half a decade. EVERYONE knew he overpaid CJ, that he still had plenty of jingle in his pocket,  and he was willing to make a deal.

His heart was in the right place. Unfortunately, for us fans, his planning didn't match his enthusiasm.

Technically, CJ was originally only to earn 10mil this year. It is all those restructures we are paying for now.

Is CJ overpaid? Sure, but he had the market all to himself. The other guy who was a big time FA at the same time, isn't he put of the league? Over the term, CJ has delivered. He's been a good player, leader and teammate. He's been super consistent and a force against the run. His play only really dipped when he was hurt. Stats can be inflated for everyone but at the end of the day, all players are measured by their stats and the team win. Overall, I'm very happy to have him on our team.
