Okay this thread stems from one of the other GOT threads. I don't want to get too spoilery here. If you want to spoil things, go to the book thread.

I would like to use this thread to point out any major plot deviations from the books to the show, in order to shine light on why book readers can be seemingly whiny about the changes at times. Also, there might be some show-only folks that are considering the books, or don't want to read them at all, and just want more info.

I'll try to update this as I think of differences, and encourage you all to do so as well.

To start with, I think the biggest changes are the omission of some characters. I won't say much about these characters other than who they are, in hopes that maybe the show will tackle them in the future.

Off the top of my head, you have Theon's uncles, Euron, Victarion, and Aeron. They all have roles that I feel like the show will get to next season, at least partially.

Other missing characters include: Arianne Martell (Doran's daughter), Coldhands (appears to be an intelligent wight, or something, riding an elk that runs into Bran and co. and assists them in getting to the cave), Lady Stoneheart (I am torn whether or not to say who/what she is due to the potential that the show breaks down and includes her), Strong Belwas (a guy that was helping Barristan in his journey to Dany, and who joined Dany's council after), Jeyne Poole (Sansa's childhood friend we saw in season one, but she has a bigger part in the books (namely acting as a fake Arya in Sansa's role this past season)), Willas and Garlan Tyrell (older brothers to Margaery and Loras), Val (Mance Rayder's wife and child bearer) and a slew of other players in the North and South, heads of smaller houses, etc.

Some characters have had different outcomes or roles on the show. The biggest of these were Robb's wife (still alive in the books, and some even think her family helped plan the Red Wedding, named Jeyne Westerling in the books), Sansa (playing the role of Fake Arya (Jeyne Poole) this past season), Bronn (kind of happy with Lollys in the books, it seems... he has taken on an advanced role in the show), Tyrion (hasn't met Dany face to face in the books), Barristan Selmy (still alive in the books), Stannis (still alive in the books (maybe in the show?)), Brienne (most of her stuff this season and last is brand new material), etc.

I'm sure I am forgetting a lot of stuff on the character differences front, but those are the first I notice.

For the most part, a lot of the plotting seems the same. Hardhome didn't really happen like it did on the show. Jon SENT Stannis' boats, and they came back with tales of terrible things, sicknesses, etc. and lost some ships on the way. Sam got sent away to Oldtown with Gilly, a swapped baby (Mance Rayder's child), and Maester Aemon (who dies on the boat trip) before the events of the finale. Wun Wun the giant causes a distraction at the wall by literally ripping apart a knight, which is when For The Watch happens in the books (everyone is lost in the chaos of what Wun Wun is doing)...

Agree totally on Loras...

Another big difference I just thought of was the difference in the amount of prophecy. In the books, there is tons. It opens the door to a lot of the theories we always bring up.

Also, in the books, Arya and Jon have both had dreams where one could assume they are unknowingly warging into their dire wolves. Neither has explored it beyond having the few dreams, however.

Loras Tyrell is a big change that bugs me. In the books he was so in love with Renly that he never took another lover. Show turned him into a slut who got over Renly real quick. Also, he was the 3rd son, not the heir, and joined the Kingsguard.

​I agree. It's one of the things I'm most disappointed with in the show. His line in the book about once the sun goes down no candle can replace it was a great line. They cheapened him and Renly and I can't figure out why. I feel like turning him into a slut didn't add anything great to the show besides implicating him for the high sparrow.

 

I also wish they didn't get rid of Garlan and Willis Tyrell, but I can understand why they didn't want to add too many characters.

I started off with the show then went to the books... Then back to the show when I knew all the spoilers..( Joffrey, the fight between the mountain and the Red Vyper) . At the end of one of the books .. Someone that I'll keep a nameless female character is alive again or at least upright at a river. Along with the OP's posts about Theon's family. Can anyone shed any light ?

One thing that I definitely liked better in the show than the books was the ages of the kids.  I just got weirded out thinking about Tyrion marrying a 12 year old girl.  Not that 16 makes it a whole lot better...

Yeah not to mention Dany being 13 when Daario "took her in every way a man could take a woman."

I can think of a lot of ways.

      Real Mid-Season Development at QB: Bo Nix

      I know most of this place doesn't favor Bryce, so I'm preaching to the choir. Also - screw the Broncos and Peyton.   Okay, with that being said... Seeing what Nix has done this season is something we should all tune into.  Why?  His first two games were, well bad would be putting it lightly.  He looked in over his head, pro-level shocked, you could see the anxiousness.  He needed to settle down in the pocket and adjust to the game.  And you know what? He did just that.     And as the season has progressed, he has got better and better each week. All this through OL injuries and weapons like Sutton, Vele (who?), Lil'Jordan Humphrey (who?) & Mims, he has managed to ascend and bring himself into ROTY contention over Jayden Daniels & Brock Bowers.   And he's making advanced throws, layering in the second level, put them in position to beat KC the other week until the ST unit lost it. The short version of my point - Bryce's recent "progression" is relative.  This is the type of progression you would like to see as a season goes on and a kid gets adjusted to the pace of the NFL.
