Brenton Bersin continues to impress

some of you need to free yourselves of this bizarre mentality that some rando is going to come in to OTAs or camp and just be handed a roster spot over another guy who is entrenched at his spot on the depth chart and is liked by the quarterback and has some chemistry with him because he's faster or more "talented" or whatever.  maybe if he lights camp and the preseason on fire but that's not really that common for an UDFA/late round prospect and that's being generous.

you want to know what happens to guys who come in to the league fast, big, running great routes, and catching everything that gets near them?  they get drafted in the first round.  everybody that's fighting for a 4th or 5th spot on a wide receiver depth chart has some kind of deficiency.  in bersin's case it's because he's not particularly athletic or fast but he can catch, he runs solid routes, and our $100 million franchise quarterback likes throwing to him.  i think that gives him a leg up on a guy who's just fast or just talented or just has "upside".

take it up with rowboat ron.  or if you think it's jer bear's fault then quit lining his pockets by watching the panthers.

Damn, I forgot to put Brown in there.

Well, to update it then..

Benjamin - #1

Funchess - #2

Brown - #3

Ginn #4

Bersin #5

Cotchery or Byrd for #6

I don't really see that Cotchery makes it unless he absolutely balls out in camp/preseason. We need all the speed we can get.

We are pretty damn stacked at WR, I don't understand what there is to bitch about exactly.

Stacked?  No, definitely not.  Bersin has zero chance to earn a roster spot on a stacked WR roster.  I can understand why fans think it's stacked though.  We look like we may actually have the talent pool to field a legit NFL WR corps here in Carolina for the first time in a looooooong time.  But stacked?  No.

Dont give answers yet..do your research like you wanted to..you are going to have to give a reasonable number of examples in order to make a valid point.

They both were in the 3rd 4th 5th Wr range and had better  numbers..

I think you're applying a context to that word that was not my intention.

Not stacked as in top within the league. Stacked in terms of compared to what we have had at times since Newton first arrived.

Were we worried about having roster spots to fit all our WR's around this time last year?

It is light years ahead of last years group without a doubt. We paid cam big money. Give him the best and most diverse options on the field as possible. This is his offense.

honestly I don't want cotchery on the field

Just a question...  Who would you rather see get playing time.. Bersin Cotchery Byrd Hill or Boykins..

I rather see Hill or Byrd...

Just do

I don't know because there all playing in shorts and no pads. Byrds speed is intriguing but it ends there for right now. We need to see preseason games to get a better picture

But you can have a idea of what you hope to have in a 4th and 5th Wr..  Do you want a possession guy or a potential game breaker?

You are assuming they are game breakers before ever seeing them catch a pass as a Panther. Why? If any prove to be that then great. You've already decided though based on just hope.

This is what I  want from my 4th and 5th Wr on the roster..

1. Special teams ace..

2. A specialist you can design plays and packages for..

3. A spot starter

4. A young development  player with skill sets to become a future starter..

Who on our roster fits any of these ccategories  best should make the team..

Speed and or size can't be taught..  Route running and developing  better hands can be...

In a perfect nfl world, yes you would want that. but there are other teams that would be making the same mistake you claim the panthers would be making if bersin was somehow to make the team yet again...

    • What I really learned here is that the Carolina Panthers aren't anywhere near as bad as I initially thought they were earlier this year.  We've got a young and growing offense with some promising parts. But it still needs some tweaks and improvements.  We really still could still use a dominant #1 WR. But Chubba,  Legette, Coker,  and J.Sanders have generally looked decent. Bryce took a big leap after the benching. We can score enough points to keep pace with 2x defending super bowl champions, so offense isn't a huge issue. Main thing that needs improvement is defense. We sorely need a CB 2, and a number of new players at Dline and LB.  We're not quite as bad at edge with Wonnum showing promise.  But we definitely need 1 or 2 more edges Clowney is old.  Run D is probably worse prevailing theme these past couple years. We really need a good young stud or two to pair with Derrick Brown and another LB to pair up with Trevin Wallace. If Morgan and Canales can focus on rebuilding the defense this off-season and possibly going out and getting a #1 WR. This team could easily be somewhere around 7-10 to 10-7 and flirting with playoffs in 1 or 2 seasons. Overall this game has made me feel alot more positive about the direction of the team.
    • With our picks we need pass rush, lb, Safety, a speedster yac wr, o line depth and I still want a mid round qb. We got 9 picks and 8 in the first 5 rounds. If they pull Off another solid draft we be cooking.
    • We had one passing touchdown against the Giants and one passing touchdown against the Chiefs today. Yes a good backup can replicate that. And that is why Andy Dalton in significantly less games has the same number of 30 point outings as Bryce Young. I am on board with you guys about wanting to be hopeful for the future. Today was a good performance to build on especially at home. But let's please keep things in perspective. BTW the Bucs who honestly aren't even that good blew the doors off the Giants today after we went to overtime against them with 17 points. Again. Perspective.
