Offense was eating today

Salary cap woes aside, I'm reserving judgement for a few years considering the fact that most of the team (and some of our best players in Cam, Olsen, and Kuechly) are Hurney guys.

Team? Perhaps. But when it comes to starters, Hurney's influence is steadily fading, especially in the trenches.

Look across the starting O and D lines and you'll see only a few Hurney guys left. Ditto the receiving corps.

Also telling is that the 9 highest paid guys on our team are Hurney guys. Gettleman has given big money to Cam, picked up a very expensive 5th year option for Luke, extended Olsen, and re-signed Graham Gano, but no other Hurney guy has been extended yet, including Big Frank, Norman, and Nortman.

Is that because the financial consequences of cutting players with those Hurney contracts was too much for our cap to handle? Or that Gettleman deemed their production in line with their salary? Probably a mix of both. TD and Tolbert will be free agents after this year, and I don't imagine Gettleman being softer on them than he was with Captain Munnerlyn or Colin Cole when they hit the market in 2013 and eventually re-signed back here on cheap deals when they didn't get the big $$$.

Gettleman seems to have brought more objectivity to the process than our previous GM.

This isn't really surprising considering the average nfl career is less than three seasons.

I suppose I agree with most of it other than the last part. Other than Dan Morgan, Steve Smith, Mike Rucker, and Kris Jenkins, everyone else was drafted by Hurney.

Yeah, but if you give me 70 draft picks over 10 years, I think I could brag that I had 10 good picks.  This team gradually got worse under his guidance.  If Jake Delhomme had chosen dallas over Carolina (he almost did), he would have been exposed sooner.  But he was OK until the last 3 years or so, when he either got overconfident or desperate.  His spending in free agency made me sick.  The Panther players, off a 2-14 season, were literally laughing when being interviewed about their ridiculous contracts.  They are finally coming off the books now.
