Cord Cutters Sound Off

Jase

Recommended Posts

I am looking to cut the cord in October.

I have small kids so getting multiple PBS stations is important to me.  I have tried the bunny ears indoors route and some stations are spotty.  South Charlotte is lower than all of the stations, making reception more susceptible to hills... and trees.

Anyway, to try to get more stations, I'm looking at getting an antennas direct db8e and sticking it in my attic.

Heck, I may get two of them and gang them together.  We already have netflix and I was thinking of getting sling TV and add the sports package.

What's everyone's cord cutting setup like?  I see two disadvantages so far: There's no way to get NFL network or the hornets games.  NFL Network I can watch on my phone (thanks verizon!) but it looks like I'm SOL about the hornets games (how will I live without the paralyzing mediocrity?)

Tried it for 2 months when I moved out to Denver.

Im a much happier Comcast customer today. Too many nights where I spent more time looking at the ApleTV screen saver because the neighborhood decided it was streaming content night.

We cut the cord in February. I am going to preface this by saying your TV experience will absolutely change in many ways, and for some people the dramatic change is too much for them to handle and they hate it. YOU have to change YOUR habits...

We went from paying over $200 using Uverse and having every channel to the following:

Comcast 50mb internet $50 (you need a high speed internet option here for multiple streaming devices, att could only offer 18mbs. Don't go cheap here).

Get Netflix and Sling TV (HBONOW also)

We got the Amazon version of an attic antenna. It gets about 60 HD channels (we live in the burbs of atlanta). The cost is great and it's easy to install if you know what your doing. $99 for antenna

steaming devices - Smart TVs are garbage, don't rely on them. You need to have a streaming device on every TV. I have one of each, Roku, Apple TV, Chroamcast. The best hands down is the Roku3. The Chromecast is nice on my kids playroom TV because I can throw YouTube Ninja Turtles or Netflix Strawberry Shortcake on with ease. The Roku lets you stream SlingTV without having to use your device. Apple TV has a very small selection of apps and sucks in my opinion.

As far as sports programs, yes it sucks you won't be able to see them from your couch right now. The major sports organizations are smart enough to know cord cutting is reaching some pretty high masses and I am sure there are plans for streaming in the future. You have to get creative with how you watch sports. Again, it's about changing your habits.  Hell I was going to have the May/Pac fight at my house but couldn't cause I don't have PPV.  But the money we are saving and the more time my family is spending together makes me never want to pay for cable again

We currently pay for the 50mbps internet which TWC will be boosting to 200mbps sometime over the summer to keep people from jumping ship to google fiber.  We have a firetv and netflix, and we're getting slingtv.  I guess we're "cord compromisers" not true cord cutters.

I just got rid of sling, it could be good one day but right now it's crap! To buggy.

We came to the realization that, other than sports, our kids dominate the TV watching in my house.  And they watch more netflix than anything else.  Easy decision when directv is between 95-120 dollars per month, depending on how much of a discount we can negotiate with them.

That sucks, I was hoping someone would come in with an opinion on sling.

They are new (and cheap), though, so I'm still tempted to give them a shot.

I have no issues with sling TV...been using it on a Roku since Day one and it has come a long way. My guess is the people who are having issue with asking are probably having issues with their internet and not the service.

If we had access to Google Fiber I'd do it in a heartbeat, not even thinking about it with our current TWC setup.

Really? You only need about 7mbps to stream HD over netflix...

Let me preface this by saying I work for a cable company, but it's not in your area so I'm not trying to sell ya. This is my opinion from my own experiences and from what customers tell me. Don't do Sling TV. It's limited. You can only stream on one device at a time, it eats your data, it's inconsistent, and when you add the sports pack it really doesn't save you much. It's going to be difficult to keep your sports programming strictly OTA. Depending on your household viewing habits once you add the different OTA packages (like HBONow, Sling TV, and other services) you can be paying just as much if not more than a cable package. Plus you're using more data, which will increase your internet costs. If it's just you, maybe you'll save a bit. But if you're throwing in kids shows and home and garden shows and stuff on top of your sports, you could end up paying more. Plus the hassle of multiple bills. I would suggest at least talk to your local cable company. We have packages geared toward streamers; I would imagine they do. Plus you can bundle your internet, too. If you do cut the cord, I would still avoid Sling TV if your household consists of more than you.

    • The SEC were not having GT upset Georgia at home. Horrendously corrupt officiating in this game - the non-PI on 4th down and the non-targeting call on the King fumble. Good lord.
    • I like how they were about to punt the ball right before the two minute warning before being like... oh fug, this'll be too obvious we gotta try a FG then ole boy skulls one that never got more than about 12 feet off the ground. LOL!
