Andrew Brandt on D.G and the deal

Brandt who has been the money guy for the Packers (and has been involved in almost every aspect in NFL contracts etc.), thinks Gettleman has totally changed the  direction of this franchise. He says the fiscal restraint D.G. had shown in FA and contract negotiations has laid the ground work for many years of success for this franchise.

He also has worked with Cams agent Buzz Cook before and actually agreed to the first 100 millon contract in the league for Brent Farvre. The agent for Farvre was Buzz Cook. Brandt thinks Cam got a good deal and the contract is in line with the going rate for  a franchise QB. Bottom line is that our GM is top notch and is highly respected In the league for his abilities and team building plan. Dave setting the new standard in this league for how to do business.

But think of all the shiny new toys we could've had instead of saving to re-sign Cam!!! Who needs a franchise QB when you've got Jared Veldheer playing LT and have Hakeem Nicks, Torrey Smith, Greg Jennings and Percy Harvin catching passes from Derek Anderson for the next 4 years?!?!

Dave plans for the future, not just the immediate but the delayed as well. I'm willing to say there will be at least one Lombardi trophy in the next five years.

If Cam continues to improve, year over year, I will give him as long as it took Manning 1 to get to the big dance.

Gettleman has to start being considered a top 5 GM.  He inherited a talented but underachieving team with a slew of awful cap-crushing contracts.  Even with Cam's extension the Panthers still have close to $40m in cap space next year.  When Charles Johnson, Ryan Kalil, and Jonathan Stewart's contacts come off the books in 2017 (I expect none of those players to be on the opening day roster in 2017 btw) the Panthers will have over $100m in cap space.  Gettleman has done an incredible job managing the cap AND nailing on the draft picks.  Dude is crushing it.
