Will Brinson states facts on Cam Newton

Recommended Posts

1. He's grown as a passer -- the numbers back it up, but his mental and physical progression is clear. Not leaps and bounds last year but he's grown from the raw product we saw when he came from Auburn.
2. Cam's cleared two of the benchmarks for NFL quarterbacks: he's been to the playoffs and he has a playoff win. He's the only NFC South quarterback to EVER win back-to-back division titles.
3. He has no one around him! Kelvin Benjamin helped last year and adding Devin Funchess is big too, but let's not act like Cam is working with a stacked deck.
4. His offensive line has stunk. It's getting better too but he's been a quarterback under fire.
5. He's working in a limited offensive system. Plug him in the Philadelphia Eagles system with Chip Kelly and he's shattering records.
6. What's the alternative??? This is the biggest one for me: if you DON'T pay Cam, you want to go and try your luck in the draft or in free agency? The top players available were Jameis Winston and Josh McCown. You don't want that life, Mox.
7. The minimum amount of guaranteed money on the deal is going to be $40 million because Cam's owed $14.5 million for 2015 on his option and would get $25 million(ish) for a 2016 franchise tag.
I bet this ends up looking like a Matt Ryan type deal from the Atlanta Falcons -- his agent has to understand it'll get beat by Philip Rivers and Andrew Luck in the next year so it should be a current top-5 contract.

And Point Four is silly. For whatever you thinl of Shula, the Coryell system is one of the best established offenses in the league. Kelly's using a gimmicky system that wears out his own defense.

It wins though, and his offense is always near the top even with Mark shitty Sanchez.

The Coryell system is great. Shula is not.

It hasn't truly won much of anything yet. And there were signs late last season that other teams had caught up to it. We'll see this coming season.

I'd add that records don't mean jack.
