X Y Z

You know it does bring up a question that I could have asked, but didn't.  Probably should have (Thanks).

For those who have read about these roles and what they do, who do you see as the best choices for:

- The Number One

- The Number Two

- The Slot Receiver

...and why?

I don't think that matters.  The X, Z, slot (in my interpretation, of the base positions the slot is borrowed from F), all of that is a "fit" thing, a concept of who to feature (or whether the slot could, in fact, be a featured player) can philosophically change all the time.   I mean, as of right now our offense runs through a tight end who is split over half the time (I guess Kelvin got more targets, but wouldn't have with fewer Olsen blocks).

So, in my opinion, you just put your best people out there and you throw to the open man. A lot of how that gets to that point is more reliant on the QB versus coverage.

Oh, I acknowledge that.  I'm just asking what people think is the best fit for a base package for discussion purposes.

Once the season starts, it's gonna be all over the place.

In the end, I would like to be able to do what the Patriots do. Not run their kind of offense, but have their kind of game planning. It seems they literally will attack your weakness. If Brady has to throw 50 times, they will. And the next week they may run it 50 times.

You have to have the personnel to be that flexible. But I do respect their ability to beat you any number of ways. And I think we may have the personnel to go more that route. It seems we have talent at so many positions now that we can actually start to game plan vs opponents vs just trying to out execute them.

To be honest, that pretty accurately reflects what Rivera said was his vision for the team when he first got here.

Rivera defined "balance" as being able to hit them any way you wanted to, whatever worked best against them.

For what it's worth, Jonathan Jones quotes this (F) in the following article:
