Why aren't Refs wearing protective gear?

I'm watching Football Follies of NFL network now. They have follies of refs getting hit. Makes me wonder why they don't wear protective equipment. They could wear a helmet with the facemask of a kicker thats down low and wear small shoulder pads with a flak jacket and pants like the players wear with knee, upper leg, and hip padding. It's not that complicated. It wouldn't keep them from doing their job. Why hasn't it been done?

Because there really isn't a need for it. How many refs get seriously injured? No one is purposely trying to hit a ref, except that thug Luke Keachly, so I think that minimizes any real issue. These are old men as well. Strapping on 20lbs of pads and I could see it affecting their job. Same with the helmet falling or what not etc. I just don't think it's needed but then again I think refs should be replaced with technology and find it silly to rely on a 60 year olds' eyesight and slowing though process vs. just putting a damn chip in the ball.

I remember wondering, as a wee lad, why the hell they couldn't put an accurate chip in a ball and outfit the entire field with sensors.

I could see a helmet similar to what hockey refs wear but that's about it. Aside from the one official in the middle of the defensive backfield all the others are pretty much out of the way (or should be if they are doing their jobs correctly.)

No gear keeps them quick but not weighted down. It amazes me how much ground those guys cover each game, no plays taken off.

And we've all seen those breakaway touchdowns where a running back shooting down the sideline, leaving other football players in the dirt, and here's some 60 year-old dude in a zebra shirt, running along with him, backwards, watching the sideline and the player simultaneously.

You can call refs blind and/or stupid, but never call them lazy or slow.

    • I went on a solo elk hunt in the Flat Tops. It was awesomely miserable. LOL It was a late season hunt, I think third season and it was forecasted to snap off cold with highs in the upper thirties and lows in the single digits. fug it, I'm going anyway. They were wrong. The highs were in the low 20s and the lows were in the negative teens. I shivered so hard the first night I thought my teeth were going to break. It was the only time I've ever been legit concerned that I might be in trouble. Crawled out of my sleeping bag and got a fire started and suffered through the night bundled up next to the fire. I slept the next two nights literally wearing every stitch of clothing I'd brought with Nalgenes full of near boiling water in the bottom of my sleeping bag. That was the only way to have non-frozen water in the morning anyway. There was about a foot of snow on the ground and the melt/freeze crust was almost enough to support your weight but you'd go crashing through just as you went or make your step. It was exhausting travel and every step sounded like a rifle shot. Hunting was basically impossible. I never saw an elk in those four days, only saw 5-6 deer. LOL It was brutal but I loved it. Absolutely beautiful country that is never been to before and haven't been back since. I needed that four day complete break from society fighting for my life against the elements. I'm weird like that.
    • The lack of production is especially surprising given how much effort the team put into coaxing the best from him.  In just six short years he’s had the opportunity to work with 3 different GMs, 7 different head coaches and 10 different starting quarterbacks.  There’s literally no excuse to be made that one of those combos didn’t work.  It might be time to look withIAN.
    • I would say maybe 8 in a tier by themselves and all but 2 where picked in the top of the first allen pat m stroud burrow jackson hurts (maybe) Herbert Stafford
