Grab a crab basket too and let it sit overnight with some bait in it...I promise you will have 2-4 (maybe more) when you wake up to check it.

You have to have a comm liscense to use a basket. Open nets and strings are ok for rec guys, though.

Go for it, and pray you get some softshells.

Last I read the Annual Recreational License didn't cover fully enclosed traps, you had to purchase the $60 commercial license. With the rec one you could only use lines or open nets. I haven't looked into it in a couple of years, though.

Just find out they have loads of blue crab. Crab net is dirt cheap. Anyone done it?

Go buy a pot, not a net and find some deep water sound side that you can get to.

You probably want to be in about 5-8 feet of water, no less than a couple feet at dead low tide.

Use cut mullet, or the heads of the fish that you catch during the day.  You can leave them out there for up to 48 hours, but I wouldn't do that.

I drop my pots around noon and pick them up the following day around 3-4, clean them and either steam/boil them or fry them up.

You don't have to kill them right away if you want to do a "boil" later in the week, just put them in a bucket and keep them wet, they will live that that for a couple days.

They are a little tough to clean and pick, but the meat is fantastic, and it's perfect to go along with friends and beer.

You will catch some like that, but not likely enough to feed multiple folks.

Attached is what we use, we put out 4 or 5 during the week, and have a crab boil on Friday or Saturday nights.post-1215-0-50507800-1432324821_thumb.jp

The one we always used was like a pyramid but it laid flat when it hit the bottom...  When you pulled the chord it would go into a pyramid and trap those little bastards in there....

Just got back from crabbing at the San Francisco pier. Caught about 20 crabs of different variations. I couldn't tell the difference between Dungeness and Rock crab so I walked down and talked to some park rangers and asked them to see if they can guide me on what is legal and illegal. In short, half of the crabs I caught were illegal. Made me throw them back into the ocean. He stated that the only reason he didn't fine me $1,000 was because I sought him out instead of being caught. Dungeness crabs have white claws and anything with black claws you can have. Needless to say, I'm cooking the ones I got back right now.
