There are a couple things that I like about this.  It's been stated that Gman isn't afraid to admit he made a mistake.  I'm not happy that we didn't get a depth player but it's better to let players go than keep them and hope forever.  Also a major positive is that our roster is getting good enough that we no longer have spaces for players who aren't going to play.  I'm really excited to see what our squad can do this year!

Kug had a serious and possibly chronic back problem and had to undergo spinal surgery, so at that point I think playing football was out of the question. He wanted to come back, and put his faith in God, but when your back is deteriorating it's over.

4th round is still a valuable round. Reaching for small school o-linemen is careless drafting.

 

Easy to fool yourself into thinking you've found a diamond in the rough when you watch these small school o-lineman dominate.

Yeah, and it sucks because that stuff is in large part beyond your control and difficult for anyone to predict. 

 

I do like that G-man is willing to admit when it's over and move on, in the past we've clung to people for way too long simply because of professional pride.

A fourth round pick that didn't work out.  Even if he was healthy that is to be expected.  People around here have unrealistic expectations of the draft.

 

Was he a reach to a lot of people?  yes

Was he to the Panthers?  no, or they wouldn't have drafted him

 

Once you get into the later rounds of the draft I would guess there is a good bit of variance among teams on how they have players graded.  For example the 10th rated guard on one team's draft board can easily be the 15th on another.  I doubt you see that kind of variance among the top 5 at each position.

 

So that I don't sound like a total Front Office apologist I will say that sometimes coaches and GMs can fall in love with the idea of finding those "hidden gems".

 

Either way its next man up.  DG doesn't seem afraid to churn the bottom of the roster.
