2011 NFL draft revisited, would you take JJ Watt over Cam?

Recommended Posts

imagine how mad haplo is going to be when watt is inducted into the hall of fame and is considered one of the greatest defensive linemen to ever suit up and is in the company of bruce smith, reggie white, and deacon jones

Or

when our very own Luke Kuechly is and is considered on the the greatest middle linebackers ever to put on a helmet.

Not a matter of "or".

I have no doubt both of these things will happen.

I'd still take Cam first. Draft philosophy should be BPA, but weighed in terms of impact of positions. And although DE is one of the most important positions, its still very undervalued relative to QBs. I think both Cam and JJ both add 4-5 or so wins to their teams based on their impact alone. Also, I don't see Watt playing at a higher level than he's played at the past 2 seasons, but I think Cam can still elevate his play.

Cam vs Luck... which QB...

Won the Heisman Trophy?

Won the SEC Championship?

Won the BCS Championship?

Owns NFL Rookie Yardage Record?

Owns NFL Rookie TD Record?

Career NFL Playoffs...

Luck: 56% Cmp, 9 TD, 12 Int, 70.8 Rtg

Cam:: 61% Cmp, 5 TD, 5 Int, 80.3 Rtg

Luck is not the golden child of football that everyone makes him out to be. He has been proclaimed as the 2nd coming of a Jesus-Elway-Manning hybrid since he was in high school.

And he's never won poo.

He didn't win a Heisman or championship in college. He fell to Newton for the Heisman & played like poo in big games & lost a chance to play for a title (that Newton also won).

He hasn't won anything in the NFL either besides beating up on his shitty division. His playoff performances have been downright atrocious.

Not to mention Luck has twice as many years experience as a starting QB. He's a mostly finished product. Cam is still learning to play on the run.

Is Luck the best young QB in the NFL? Arguably. Is he hands down better than Newton? Hell no.

“And Cam Newton – that’s plutonium-grade raw material, you know? I haven’t seen upside like with this guy.“

Jim Harbaugh made those comments in 2011 right after leaving Stanford for the 49ers. The offensive minded coach & QB guru who had just spent 3 years coaching Andrew Luck flat out said Cam Newton was the best QB prospect he'd seen.

So no, I would not trade Cam/Luke for Luck/Watt.

PS...

That's 2-2 head to head. Cam has won the 2 ganes that mattered most & back to back division titles over Brees.

Enjoy your shitty team falling back into mediocrity as Brees continues to deteriorate into an old, washed up QB.

Those moving goalposts doe.

I don't care what either QB did in college, because it's irelvant to the NFL. Reggie Bush was one of the greatest college running backs to ever play. What's that got him in the NFL? I don't care what either won in college, because neither has won poo in the NFL.

And since when are playoff stats the only things that matter? Luck, in his third year, just threw for 40 TDs. He again threw for a lower interception percentage than Newton. You guys consistently complain about Newtons oline, have you ever watched the Colts? They're one step above turnstiles. He's played with TY and an old injured Reggie Wayne. Never a decent running back. A horrid defense. TY and Luck are the only things that the Cokts have going for them.

If you can't watch Luck play and see the quarterback that he is, I'm not sure what to say. It seems to me that most Panthers fans see any compliment to Luck as a slight to Cam. It just doesn't work that way. Luck is head and shoulders above Newton as a QB and the only people who would argue against that are Panthers fans. Personally, I feel like he's passed Brees as well.

P.S. I'm not going to make this a Saints vs. Panthers thread. The last 2 years the Panthers are 1.5 games better than the old, declining Saints. Cam Newton has never had a season like grandpa Brees had last year. That's all I'll say on the matter.

Yeah, Luck threw 40 TD last season. He also threw 600 passes for the 3rd time. But hey, it only took him 3 seasons to surpass Cam's 35 TD rookie mark.

You keep blabbering about how Luck had a better Interception percentage last year. Yeah, it was better than Cam by 0.1%.

Career...

Stat: Luck vs Newton

Cmp%: 58.6 vs 59.5

TD%: 4.7 vs 4.3

Int%: 2.4 vs 2.8

Ypa: 7.1 vs 7.5

Rtg: 86.6 vs 85.4

Luck & Newton are pretty much identical as passers, regardless of what you or the masses think. Neither are that great. They are both pretty average throwing the ball. Luck's raw passing totals are bigger because he throws the ball twice as much. But when you break down everything they are equal.

Then you add in the rushing element, where Cam destroys Luck.

Like I said, there's not much of a gap between the two at this point. Andrew Luck is vastly overrated. He is an average passer.

As for Brees... LOL....

'14 DB: 7 wins, 34 TD, 20 turnovers

'11 CN: 6 wins, 35 TD, 19 turnovers

Congratulations, your $25MM QB equaled Cam's rookie season last year.

Luck has also greatly benefitted from playing in a terrible division with no other quarterbacks to note since entering the league.

Luck is 16-2 against his division since entering the league. The offenses in Houston, Tennessee, and Jax simply can't keep up with the Colts' offense because none of them until this season even have any promise or talent at the position.

He's barely over .500 against non-AFCS teams since entering the league.
