For all we know Cam might have wanted 130 million last year. An extra 10 million two years later on a contract that large isn't that bad considering you had 2 extra years with low commitment. There is always a chance a player gets hurt or regresses.

Now if Cam would have signed for $96m/6yrs last year then yes we could end up regretting the decision to wait.

If I'm not mistaken Flacco signed for around $20m a year a few years ago. I've always thought Cam would ask for around $21-$23 m a year, which would put the total in the $125-140m range.

I seriously doubt Tannehill's contract has any influence on what Cam is expecting.

I don't get the obsession with making Cam the highest paid player in the league, as if that somehow makes him elite. It helps the team in no way possible, especially when he's never led the league in any major passing stat. I think 18 per year is fine.

So what you're saying is that you'd rather pay Cam year to year in fully guaranteed money using the franchise tag (probably around $70 million guaranteed in 3 years) rather than sign him to a long term contract more friendly to the team.

Outside of the few elite power hitters that have gotten massive deals (Rodriguez, Cabrera, Stanton, etc) pitchers make all the big money in baseball and they only play roughly 33 games.

Clayton Kershaw: 7yr $215MM

Both guys are making roughly $1MM per game played.

Baseball is different, though. No salary cap.

That's just insane money. Land most baseball teams are having a hard time filling their stadiums.

Baseball has lost so much luster because of the roofs and HGH. I'd put money on half the NFL takes HGH but no one cares because of the physicality of the sport.

i also doubt bus cook was in cam's ear telling him that he should be in a hurry to sign an extension with the panthers.

You have to view this situation as it is right now. The market for QB's is only going up, up, up, and up some more after that.

Indeed, it likely WOULD be worse than my first guess.

Which actually makes a contract for $22-25 million over 5 to 6 years with around $80-90 million guaranteed LOOK EVEN BETTER.

Why?

Because either (1) he's gonna make that guaranteed $$$ under the franchise tag over much less time than a long-term, more team-friendly contract anyway, or (2) some other team WILL be happy to pay it to him.

Who's to say they haven't been trying? Good chance Cam and his agent haven't been in a rush.
