Frank Garcia thinks 6 years 150 million for Cam

We'll look back in hindsight and realize that the biggest mistake Gettleman made was not locking Cam up long-term at the earliest opportunity. Waiting and letting him play under the 5th year option is going to cost us tens of millions in cap space long-term.

No it's not.

Thought the same but even a blind squirrel finds a nut sometimes. Food for thought on May 19. JMO but I think it's probably close.

It's not the fact that it's his opinion that I question.

It's the notion that Frank Garcia actually thinks

Depends on Wilson.  Both parties need to see that deal before real negotiations can begin.

Cam will want similar numbers, but the Panthers will point to the SB win and the fact we've never beaten him.

I think this WAS true. But Ryan Tannehill just changed the whole landscape of this thing.

Cam threw for more yards in his first four years than Matthew did with FAR inferior weapons. That's not even counting the rushing element. I'd MUCH rather pay 25 per for a lion as opposed to 20 for a pussy cat.

Well, the fact remains that Ryan has been the more efficient QB, better weapons or not.  The only year that Cam had "far inferior" weapons was last year. I know that you won't agree with that statement, but I am not going to get in a pissing match over Ryan, because I dislike the pussy...cat.  Ryan did have better weapons though, as did most of the NFL in my opinion.

Many won't agree, but I feel that we did Cam a disservice, especially last year by not giving him the weapons or protection to thoroughly grade his progression as a pocket passer.  He overcame anyway, and, that being said, we are going to have to pay the piper for our FO's sins.  At the same time, I am not going to overpay like other teams.  20-22 million per year with 60-80 mil guaranteed is plenty.

Lines up with Spotrac's contract forecast for Cam that was done in Sept 2014: http://www.spotrac.com/research/NFL/contract-forecast-cam-newton-474/

Final Thoughts
The Panthers know they're playing with fire by next extending Newton this offseason (see Flacco, Baltimore, $120.6M). With that being said, a $14.6M 5th year option for 2015 looks like a steal after the numbers we've formulated in this analysis. With team salary caps expected to rise more in 2015 and 2016, a $24M per year quarterbacks certainly isn't out of the question - even if right now it seems ridiculous. With players like Greg Hardy (2015) and Luke Kuechly (2016) in need of contracts sooner than later, the front office in Carolina certainly has a tough decision to make with their franchise quarterback going forward. Should they attempt to wait things out until the 2016 offseason, a holdout next season might be in the cards.

Spotrac's Prediction: 6 years, $148,800,000
Average annual salary $24,800,000, estimated $68,428,000 guaranteed

I don't get the obsession with making Cam the highest paid player in the league, as if that somehow makes him elite. It helps the team in no way possible, especially when he's never led the league in any major passing stat. I think 18 per year is fine.

I really dont think so.  The details show the Dolphins can walk away after year 2.  Not really a crippling deal.

Yeah.  Most of what I'm reading on this deal puts it more in the ballpark of the Colin Kaepernick deal rather than any bearing on Luck / Wilson / Newton.

This is the problem we have because of our shitty cap situation. Our timeframe to win big was when cam was on his rookie contract (that's just how it is these days, qb pay days hamstring s team). It's a lot, but it's not unreasonable. The other thing is, 6 years goes through his best running years, by the time 6 years is up, he will HAVE to be a pocket QB, if he doesn't improve in the pocket, we'll know and we will have used up his unique talent fully.
