Still a litte Confused why we passed over .......

Recommended Posts

A while back, one of our resident kids (I forget who) argued me that you had to trust media evaluators because "that's all we have to judge by".

Obviously, that was a terrible argument.

You don't "have to trust" media draftniks, no should you.  It's fun to read what they say - same as it's fun to read what other fans say - but it's a mistake to take them too seriously, and an even bigger mistake to think you can accurately judge the quality of our draft (or anyone's draft) by their "grades".

Throughout the lead-up to the 2015 NFL Draft, Strong was considered to be a late first-round pick, and many said there wasn't a lot that separated Strong from the consensus top-three receivers available: Amari Cooper, Kevin White and DeVante Parker. After the 6-foot-2, 217-pound Strong ran the 40-yard dash in 4.44 seconds at the Combine, many assumed that had cemented Strong's status as a first-round pick.

Strong turned back-to-back good seasons as a Sun Devil. He was an instant play-maker for Arizona State in 2013 - his first season of playing time. Strong had six 100-yard games, highlighted by a 12-reception, 168-yard performance against Stanford. For the year, he amassed 75 receptions for 1,122 yards with seven scores. In 2014, Strong recorded 82 receptions for 1,165 yards and 10 touchdowns. Strong is a big, physical receiver with powerful hands and the ability to outfight defenders for 50-50 passes.

Sources with teams said that Strong fell in the 2015 NFL Draft for a few reasons. They said he doesn't play up to his Combine speed. Even with the fast 40, some teams are concerned about Strong's ability to separate from NFL defensive backs. He also didn't run a variety of routes at Arizona State. Sources feel that Strong has underdeveloped route-running potential and is still somewhat raw. The missing elements of speed and route-running are what led to Strong sliding in the 2015 NFL Draft.

We passed on Keenan Allen.

I wanted Strong too but I guess Gettleman preferred Funchess' athleticism and upside. Strong and Hopkins are gonna make a deadly combination though.

I hear that notion thrown around a lot, but I've never agreed with it.

We took Kawann Short with our second round pick, and I've yet to hear anyone call that a bad choice.

Allen was taken in the third, a round where we had no pick because Hurney had traded it.

If you wanna say we "passed on him" in the first two rounds, so did everyone else.  And thirteen other teams that had a chance in the third didn't take it either.

Though not anywhere on my radar at the time, I am really interested to see funch and what he can do and how it affects the offense. Strong might be a really good player in the league and I would have been stoked to get him but don't think I'd be as intrigued.

There are still people mad about us missing out on Keenan Allen? It's been 3 years, lol. 30 other teams missed out on him too.

Did he also grow up in their back yard, go to the same college as their head coach and have their WR coach host and throw at his pro day?

We got it the first several times you had a meltdown about this AceBoogie.

O I'm over it, I'm just pointing out that we damn near groomed him for the draft and then didn't draft him. WRs are shaping out nicely, it only took 5 years.

i still wouldn't take allen over short.

no way. everything works itself out if you got a guy with a plan. it just takes several years to sort out. "rome wasn't built in a day" type of thing.

I firmly believe the only reason we did not go after Strong was because of the fact that we did not want another Stephen Hill on the team. And by that I mean;

6'4"  Very Fast, But will end up on our roster and because he can't get any separation, he can't make plays and then he be gone in a few years to another team to end up on a practice squad for a season and then become a playmaker....lol Yep I am glad they did not pick him. Funchess shows the awareness to be great early and often
