Listen up! There are exactly two "safe" Panthers receivers.

I just don't see us keeping Cotch. Scheme wise you have to assume Ginn and either Brown or Byrd make it for speed. Then you have Boykin who signed because of reps.

That gives you

KB

Funch

Ginn

Brown/Byrd

Boykin

????

That spot could go to Huddle legend Hill or any of the others. Cotch is expendable.

it's still just catching the ball and running.

It's not that simple. Fielding high punts is in no way similar to catching passes, and when you're used to catching passes only it's very difficult to consistently field punts... We saw this in last year's training camp. A lot. And it's not just "running." The angles at which defenders take on punts and kickoff and the approach is significantly different than any other facet of the game that Byrd has been involved in. You don't just take guys and give them an entirely new position and expect, or even hope for, them to succeed at it. Thought we learned that already with Chandler.

I agree, somewhat. Devin and KB could do nothing at all and make the roster, 100%. Ginn is as close to a lock from the rest as possible, he's 90% he's making it. Brown is a bit ahead of Cotch in terms of making the team because of youth, I'd say 60-70% chance. Cotchery and Boykin are both 50/50. Hill and Bersin about 30-40%, the rest are below 10% chance of making the active roster day 1. These numbers are 100% pulled out of my rectum.

Fwiw, I think Ginn is just as likely to be on the roster as Funchness and he will be returning punts and kicks for us.

But while its rare that we see someone become a solid kick and punt returner only after he gets to the pros, it certainly can happen.  In fact, one of the best ever (Brian Mitchell) never returned a kick or punt in college.

Like Philly and Bersin?

bersin was, and is not, a returner. He and armonti edwards were, and always will be, kick/punt receivers. the ball is kicked/punted and we ALL just hope and pray they catch the ball, fall down, without a fumble/turnover.

We typically only keep 5, I could see a potential stretch to 6 this year but I highly doubt 7. My guess (obviously subject to change):

Benjamin

Funchess

Ginn

Cotchery

Philly

If we keep a sixth: Hill, Boykin, or Bersin

Other Cuts: Presley and Mike Brown

Practice Squad: Lucas and Byrd
