Proof that Sport Illustrated "predictions" are BS

Don Banks is actually a very good writer.

But what you're seeing here is something extremely common to offseason football reporting. Specifically, a writer letting himself be a prisoner of history and convention.

You see, we know the Saints are good, and the Falcons are good. The Panthers? They're bad.

Last year? Yeah, that was probably just an anomaly. The last year even more so. This year, though, everything will go back to normal.

Can't say I'm all that surprised. It's honestly fairly rare for sports analysts to recognize when real changes are happening.

Didn't SI rate our draft with an A-, and here they are dogging us for our draft.

Our draft was built for the long haul, keeping high priced positional players on rookie contracts as we sort out long-term deals for our young core.

Who cares what SI thinks. They obviously missed all the injuries and shuffling we went through during the toughest part of our schedule.

Our guys will pull through with a great deal of improvement from last year's roller-coaster season.

Yes, a shoddy two time division winner that beat the Bucs with their backup QB and crushed the Saints and Falcons on the road to end the season.  The Panthers beat the Falcons so bad that Mike Smith was fired and the Saints made some major changes to their roster, and hung with the eventual NFC Champions in their house until the 4th quarter. Yea if you can't see this isn't a shoddy team maybe you should stop writing articles forever and be a clown instead.

Looking in from the outside, it would be hard to argue with SI on this one.

We really did suck pretty bad up until December last year, none of us can debate that. How many people were calling for the coach's head?

How many threads were there with people going, "Man, we've got to sign Such and Such in free agency"? And then we didn't.

And if you look at a draft purely on the basis of filling needs... our draft looks like we royally screwed up.

Then, historically, the NFCS has never had back to back champions, and we're probably slated to be fourth place this year, because of how it usually rotates. Sports writers are also used to Atlanta and New Orleans being regular contenders, they also think that Lovie Smith can work magic.

From the inside, however, we had the off season and draft that Gettleman wanted. He went after inexpensive guys who might be better than the press says. He drafted based on best football players available and reached a bit to get just the right receiver he felt fit. He also quietly shored up our really bad special teams unit.

I think we have quietly fixed what went wrong early last season and it should set us on the path to an even stronger team. We will need Cam to continue to grow and deliver at a higher level and we'll need our defense to be just as dominant as before.

Because we can guarantee that not all three of the other teams in the NFCS are going to suck so badly again. We got lucky last year.
