Favorite original Panther ?

Recommended Posts

These threads always pop up once a year or so and they are great. I've been pretty consistent in them that my favorite Panther from day one was Curtis Whitley. A lot of teams obviously thought they could push an expansion team around and they learned quickly lining up against Whitley that was not going to happen. A lot of people called him a dirty player but in my opinion we needed somebody like him to set the tone in the trenches

 Truly sad about Curtis-

I just looked up the '95 roster and these are the only names that I remember.

QB Kerry Collins

RB Anthony Johnson

FB Howard Griffith

OT Blake Brockermeyer

TE Walter Rasby

CB Tyrone Poole

LB Sam Mills

LB Lamar Lathan

PK John Kasay

I was born in '88, so I don't remember much from the 90s. I think at the time, as a young kid, I was just excited to have a home team and didn't really pay much attention to certain players.

My first jersey was Lamar Lathan. Off the top of my head, I only remember a few other players from the 90s.

RB Tim Biakabutuka

TE Wesley Walls

WR Michael Bates

WR Raghib Ismael

DE Reggie White

LB Kevin Greene

I remember beating the Cowboys in the '96 playoffs, then getting destroyed by GB in the NFCCG. Still remember watching that game. I don't really remember Rae Carruth or the 1-15 season.

2002 is when I started following closer, I guess mostly because I was getting older and following sports closer. I remember when John Fox was hired and watching the draft when we got Julius Peppers.

And I remember 2003 season opener vs the Jaguars. I was so pissed at halftime. Rodney Peete was horrible and Jacksonville was up by 20 or something. Then in the 2nd half seeing some crazy white dude with a weird last name running around yelling and pumping his fist playing QB and throwing TDs and pulling off the big comeback win.

I loved that crazy, erratic QB.

Tough year to start the fandom. Holy moly. [emoji482][emoji482][emoji482]

Yeah 1-15 was not a good look. But had John Fox coming in after and things have been good since. Picked up Peppers, Rodney Peete gave some national recognition because of his wife, then Delhomme took over, had Smitty returning kicks. It was a fun time and then 2003 happened. Magical. I went to every home game that year of the Cardiac Cats. Hooked ever since.

What a super special year that was. Games in Clemson were unbelievable. A 10 yr old, a 12 yr old & me. We tailgated with Subway subs in the grass parking lot, played catch with others around us. Took back roads off I-40 & I-26, saw the Blue Ridge's autumn leaves, found a small roadside stand with true SC boiled peanuts. Magical. The games kinda' run together in my head except for the very 1st one & against the Jets when Mills ran his interception in for 6.

Sam Mills

John Kasay

Mark Carrier

Bob Christian

Anthony Johnson

Willie Green

Carlton Baily, Pete Metzelaars & Frank Reich too because I was also a huge Bills fan so I had been watching them for awhile.

    • Just had Thanksgiving meal with a couple dozen family and friends. I lucked out and got one of the smoked turkey legs. Stuffing, mashed taters and gravy, green bean casserole, sweet potato casserole, kale, smoked ham, chicken and rice, corn, lima beans, cranberry sauce, and great people. My brother got his guitar out and we got to singing. Lots of actual conversations with people I hardly  ever get to see, haven't seen in a while, or who I never met before. Just a great moment to remember.
    • 3-8 would be a higher win percentage than 3-9
    • Same... With the personnel the Niners had, that defense could have been historically good in the right hands. Under Wilks they were certainly good, they didn't quite rise to that level. Honestly, I see Wilks kinda like I see Rivera: fantastic person, decent head coach. Skill wise, phenomenal DB coach, so-so DC. His greatest strength is his leadership. Hard to find many better in that department. In the Xs and Os / execution area though, not as good. Bottom Line: Wilks is the sort of coach that needs a staff that excels in those aspects of the game where he's weaker. But, like Rivera, I don't know that he scouts assistants very well. That as much as anything might be why he's not in the NFL now.
