Do you ever feel like punching yourself in the balls for passing up on a deal?

So I am notorious for negotiating very good deals whenever I buy something....whether it be a car, home electronics, work done on my house, etc...I feel like I am pretty good at getting the best price.

Anyway, on Friday on my way home, I see an estate sale sign in the country club neighborhood next to my house. IF you have never been to an estate sale, you basically walk through someone's furnished home and everything in sight is for sale.

This particular house had a 63" Samsung Plasma, Apple TV, a HD TiVo, and a Bose 321 surround sound system all for sale for $800. Even though I don't need any of this stuff, for my own amusement, I decide to see how cheap I can talk her down. I talk her down to $650 for everything above out the door.

I decide that I am going to think about it as I continue to walk through the house. I look up the TV, and it was manufactured in 2007...which means most of the stuff is probably 6-10 years old. I decide I don't want to risk buying a 8 yr old plasma, even though it would be a nice upgrade to my 55" Sharp in my bedroom. So I pass on the deal.

I thought about it that entire evening. So I go back on Saturday morning and it was already sold. Someone paid $800 for it!

So I am pissed about losing this deal. Even though I didnt "need" that stuff, I probably could have made use of it or sold it for profit. I guess on the bright side is that I still have my money!

Rule 1: Don't dwell on passed up deals. If you do, the next deal that comes along, you'll end up jumping all over it just because of the last deal you passed on, not necessarily because you want the product.

Unless you know the use history of the plasma, it was a risky purchase to begin with. The plasma is a second generation and likely only has a 30,000 - 60,000 life expectancy (8-15 years @ 10hrs of use per day).

Rule 2: If you knew- I mean, really knew- you wanted the stuff, you would not have had any second thoughts or doubts and you would have made the deal. You did not, so move on.

Nah...fug stuff you don't need. Deal or not. I go to car dealerships regularly and haggle cars I have no intention buying. I could probably make a living off it if I wanted. I've flipped cars a couple times and always make at least $1,000.

Found a beautiful Honda one day and talked the guy waaaaaay down. I could have made several thousands but didn't buy it because the guy had an attitude, which he should have had because he wasn't making poo on the deal besides a sale quota.

But money is much better to have than poo you don't need, and there is only one thing I love more than money, women and footballs and that's my time. It's just not worth it sometimes, don't sweat it.

I think you made the right choice...that plasma could've been on its last legs.  My plasma's motherboard fried last year and I had it 8 years.  You just never know.  Risk was too high. You did good.
