A Look Back

I occasionally like to go back and watch games from the previous season. This weekend I have been watching pieces of the tie with the Bengals. Do you guys realize they scored 37 points? But so did we. Here's a review, some thoughts, and a look at just how different our roster was that week.

The good:

Cam-We got to see Cam doing work as a runner and a passer. Cam absolutely went off. The offense got the ball first, and they seem to do much better when that happens. There was some good work by all three tight ends, Kelvin, and in the passing game in general.

The bad:

Running game- Fozzy started this game for us. Cam beat him in rush yards by 82 yards. No Stewart, DWilliams, Tolbert, or Brockel. The offensive line was still struggling at this point, and hadn't been solidified. 40 yards on 17 carries from your 2 top backs isn't ideal.

The ugly:

The secondary- I can't count the number of plays that our secondary gave up. I mean look at our secondary that week *Barf*

CB: Melvin White, Cason

Safety: DeCoud, Harper

Nickel: Godfrey

Thoughts:

I thought Shula called a pretty good game. Running the ball wasn't a top option. Injuries and the Bengals D made it hard to get anything on the ground unless it was Cam rushing. Its almost as if Shula was forced to call some passing plays he wouldn't normally have called... And it worked. We scored 37 points that game. Don't get me wrong, we scored big points in other games by running the ball, but this game we did it through the air. It was probably Cam's best game of the season.

We are adding depth at RB and FB, which will help against injuries that are likely to happen. We are adding pieces to an offensive line that has its interior already set. We are adding weapons around Cam and he actually has an off-season, without injury, to prepare. Our Secondary went from being one of the worst to one of the best. Watching this team struggle against the Bengals is making me hungry for football Sunday's to be back.

A little prediction: No team will score 37 points on us this season.

Question for the Huddle:

Would you like to see our offense become more "pass heavy" as we appeared to be against the Bengals, or do you think we should continue with the "run first" mentality?

That tie angers me more to this day than most any loss we've ever had.

Don't bring it up.

Yeah it sucked. But there are things to learn from the game besides the fact Ron Rivera is too conservative.

My friends and i were there, and could not believe it when they missed that chip shot at the end. I just laughed. Walking out of the stadium after the tie was like walking home from work, it was weird for sure.

All I could do was laugh. It was the most confusing feeling I have ever experienced from sports.

    • At this rate, maybe he'll be a decent 8-9 QB on his 3rd HC by year 6. Standards are so low around here now. Tepper has done some serious damage to the fan base.
