Massive blocking fullback not new to Shula

If this other guy goes in the game, its obvious we are running. He is very single dimensional. That gives away a lot of information. That is only going to hurt your run game.

If he can pick up the blitz we can still pass. Last year in the playoffs we ran a high percentage of 3 route, 7 blocking plays. Our offensive line hasn't improved enough for us to abandon that.

And one dimensional can be ok if your really bleeping good at it. Tom Coughlin once said "we have to run the ball, not just when they want us to, we have to run when we want to". If they know its coming and can't stop it... that's a beautiful thing. Defenses are getting smaller and quicker, we are getting bigger and stronger.

Imagine Olsen, Benji, Funchess, Stew, Cam, and a true blocking fullback on the field. That is a legitimate pass or run threat. If the safeties get into the box you have two huge men on the outside 1v1.

Now that the league's defenses have adjusted to faster single back sets.... Don't be shocked if a blocking fullback makes it back into the play book.

Would love to see it! Grew up on old school smash mouth I-Formation football and I don't want to see the fullback position fade away. That being said, I love the creativity Cam brings to the playbook as well.

I'm routing for Lee Ward, hopefully he can push Brockel for a roster spot so we can keep Tolbert in the mix for short yardage situations.

Tolbert is a FB in name only. He's obviously more of a running back we have asked yo become a hybrid.

This guy would be a replacement for our other FB if he proves to be a better option. He could also be a Tolbert replacement at some point.

Where are you getting this 2 FB at once thing?

Because, you wouldn't want to take out Tolbert for a pure blocking FB. You are losing an above average talent for an UDFA, who isn't even average talent.

Did you forget that Tolbert was an UDFA?

UDFA doesn't mean below average talent, especially at the FB position.  There's plenty of situations where you'd want a pure blocking FB in the game.

he won't be a replacement for tolbert. he'd be a replacement for brockel. he won't do what tolbert does as a ball carrier and receiver, but as a blocker he'd likely be much more effective. tolbert is as someone above said, a short yardage specialist. this guy is a real FB in the sense that he's a blocker. i think he very well could be more effective than tolbert in that regard.

personally i would like to see both tolbert and this guy on the field at the same time and it's quite a likely that a guy playing in that capacity as a blocking FB could be a day one contributor much like a long snapper or kicker would be. his skillset isn't highly sought out by most teams which is why we were able to pick him up as a udfa. but, his skillset could be something that we want to add to make the run game more effective.

Looks like he's ready for pass protection already too. Big plus for him making the team.

No, but this is a rookie who only brings blocking to his arsenal. I just think you are all forgetting just how good Tolbert is... And he isn't even familiar with the offense. Just watch. I highly doubt we make use of him on a consistent basis. Tolbert is freaking good. End of 2013 season, people were saying he was one of the best FB's in the league, that brought multiple dimensions to an offense.

I love Tolbert, and I think he's been really good for us.  If I'm replacing someone, it's Brockel.  That's who the kid has to beat out, IMO.  Not Tolbert.

If he makes the team, he'll be used a decent amount.  I don't think people realize how much we use a pure blocker, either at FB, or on the edge as a TE.  Sometimes a beast that's a blocking lead back is more important than the versatility.

If he can't backup at H-Back/TE and be a multiphase ST guy then he's likely not going to beat out Brockel. A pure blocking FB is simply not going to make a 53 man roster in today's nfl if he offers no versatility elsewhere. I think he'll make the PS though.

I get the feeling we're focusing on smash mouth offence a little more this season as we play the AFC south defences that have mainly been set up to counter the Colts' passing game.

I'm just not getting why people don't think Tolbert can be the versatile catching/blocking FB that he has been. He beefed up a lot last season to become more of a lead blocker and was decent at it the last few games he played in.

Tolbert is decent in pass pro but he's a hot mess blocking in the running game. he's 5'9" with stubby arms. The ideal blocking fullback is 6'1" with longer arms so they can make first contact and lock up the linebacker.
