Massive blocking fullback not new to Shula

Tolbert is capable of blocking, but he's not as good a blocker as you might expect for his size.

He's better at knocking people down once he has a head of steam than he is at walling people off.

i didnt know this. thanks Mr. Scot. :)

where do you get all your information? do you coach or used to play college or...?

This is going to be a MAJOR change for the offense if we go to more of 21/22 personnel (two backs/ one or two TEs). I believe we only ran this around 20% of the time the last few years preferring to spread out the line of scrimmage. It means that Cam will be much more of a conventionl QB and won't be running the option nearly as much. We will be much more of a true running team, forcing defenses to bring a safety into the box and and play man instead of zone and make double teams harder.

Now see, I am under the impression that Rivera and Co. are tired of 8 man fronts. The main reason for Funch is the mis-matches he (Along with KB) creates. Throw in Olson, and we have the weapons to spread teams out. Meaning, get that Safety off the line, and back in coverage.

IMO, we go as the WR corp. goes. If they can be productive enough to make teams have to keep both Safeties in coverage. We can be dangerous. 7 man fronts, we run it down our throats. 8 man fronts, we pick you apart through the air.

Why not?

I don't get the hype. Yes, this guy can bulldoze... But Tolbert brings so much more to the field. He can block, he can catch, and he can run. Why would we want to take this guy off the field? Tolbert is one of the best FB's in the game right now, who happened to be banged up last year.

You all keep talking all of these UDFA's like they are going to be day 1 contributors on offense. Come on, get a grip.

The second half for opposing D's is gonna be unpleasant this year. Just these big guys leaning on you all day is gonna wear you out.

The right side of our line? Turner, Williams, big nasty fullback and then Stewart or Cam coming through.

And it is just May. I know you are not supposed to wish your life away, but.......

This has to be the strategy. But we need to start getting double digit leads more often.

he won't be a replacement for tolbert. he'd be a replacement for brockel. he won't do what tolbert does as a ball carrier and receiver, but as a blocker he'd likely be much more effective. tolbert is as someone above said, a short yardage specialist. this guy is a real FB in the sense that he's a blocker. i think he very well could be more effective than tolbert in that regard.

personally i would like to see both tolbert and this guy on the field at the same time and it's quite a likely that a guy playing in that capacity as a blocking FB could be a day one contributor much like a long snapper or kicker would be. his skillset isn't highly sought out by most teams which is why we were able to pick him up as a udfa. but, his skillset could be something that we want to add to make the run game more effective.

I see Tolbert as a William Floyd-type of fullback. Good at catching out of the backfield, short-yardage, and especially as a red zone weapon that makes defenses pay with his versatility.

Ward would be a Howard Griffith-type of fullback. Much better blocker, but not a weapon like Tolbert.

We got room for both on the 53 if Ward shows he can handle the job in camp and preseason.

To have two FB's on the field, though? He has to be an incredible full back to make that happen. I much rather have a 3 WR set. If this other guy goes in the game, its obvious we are running. He is very single dimensional. That gives away a lot of information. That is only going to hurt your run game. I rather have Ginn on the field, so they can't stack the box, and still have the flexibility to throw a bomb, or pass. Maybe goal line this guy will contribute.... But outside of that, no.

So...does this potentially put Brokel AND Tolbert on the hotseat?  This kind of blocker may put Brokel out and bc of #'s(roster and cap) make Tolbert the odd man out.

Tolbert is sorta the forgotten guy and Rivera had to say "..don't forget we have Tolbert!" in press conferences.

HBs: J Stew, Artis-Payne, Whittaker, Tolbert(FB/HB)

FB: Richie Brokel, L Ward.
