Are Cam's fingerprints all over DG's draft/personnel strategy?

Compare and contrast these two quotes and you tell me:

Cam Newton, December 2011, under GM Marty Hurney:

What happens when you take a lion out of the safari and try to take him to your place of residence and make him a house pet? ... It ain’t going to happen. That’s the type of person that I am. I’m that lion. The house that I’m in is somewhat of a tarnished house where losing is accepted. But I’m trying to change that, whether I’m going to have to turn that house into a safari or I’m just going to have to get out of that house.

I’m not saying I’m trying to leave this place. I’m just trying to get everybody on my level.

When you lose ... and you feel like you did everything you could have done to succeed, and you look across the bench and you see someone else, and they messed up, and (they say), ‘Ah, man, we’ll get it the next play.’

Are you serious? How many times is it going to be ‘We’ll get them next time’? Next time you’re going to look up and it's going to be the last play of the game.

Dave Gettleman, 2015 Draft:

People will tell you the draft is throwing darts. Sometimes it is. But if you don't do your homework, you've got no chance. What it is, is it's educated guessing. But you have to decrease your margin of error as much as you can. And the only way you're going to be able to do that is if you've done your homework.

And there are no shortcuts. There just aren't. You've got to sit down and watch the film, and then you've got to talk about the player. You've got to decide how important football is to this kid.

In other words, it's not all about raw talent or what time some prospect can run in the 40-yard dash.

It's funny, but we've talked about it during the season in terms of bringing guys in. And I told the scouts, 'Look, everybody likes to win.' If Joe Blow is a senior playing at Auburn and I ask you, 'Joe, do you like to win?' Your answer is going to be, 'Yeah, I like to win.'

Who doesn't like to win? We've got to find the guys who hate to lose. There is a difference there. I know it sounds crazy, but you've got to find that guy who absolutely hates to lose, who absolutely wants to be the best. And those guys will overcome.

I think both quotes underscore what it means to truly be a competitor. That competitive drive is what moves one to greatness. I'm not sure all of the guys Cam was referring to during the cilture of losing could be laid at Hurney's feet but he surely had an impact on the whole dynamic.

I heard former NFL players talking recently about locker room cancers. It wasn't the TOs of the world that they hated the most. Those guys wanted to win. Yes they were super ego diva's but they wanted to win. The guys they hated the most...and they said every team had at least one...were the guys who were just there to collect a paycheck. They said that was the cancer they hated the most. I know one of the guys talking was Clinton Portis. Can't remember who the other guy was.

It's interesting because Smitty and Hardy were both let go and part of the reasoning behind both was reportedly because they were "cancers." Those guys hated to lose more than anybody in the league, on par with Cam. I'm fine with both being let go, but it certainly wasn't because either was hurting the team's chemistry, in my opinion.

I think 89 was causing friction in the locker room with some of the rookies and throwing his weight around with a big mouth. Just my feeling on it.

Can't comment on Hardy, but Smitty was one of the ones that cam's attitude about losing rubbed the wrong way.  Sure, smitty was competitive, but on a micro level.  As long as he got the best of whoever lined up across from him, losing the game was secondary.  If you'll recall, he and rivera were the main two that called Cam "Mr. Mopeyhead" early in his career.

I think people outside of a locker room would define a cancer differently than those inside it. Both players I heard speak were in agreeance and emphatic about rather having the guy who is abrasive but motivated than having the guy who acted like he cared in front of the coaches but was really just sand bagging for a paycheck.

I can understand where they are coming from but I can also understand that certain guys and their acts would get tired.
