David Newton ranks our receivers (which is very close to my own).

I don't see how Brown is rated below Boykin and Hill.

Benjamin

Cotchery

Philly

Ginn

Funchess (Until he plays)

Bersin

Boykin

Presley

Hill

Lucas

M. Brown

Byrd

Those bottom 7 will likely battle out for the last spot, and will probably go to a speedier guy.

I think it will come down to Hill and Boykin.

I have the edge going to Boykin because he plays special teams, so if Hill and Boykin are equal in terms of recieving production through camp and preseason I think Boykin will be in the 53.

But Hill stretch the field with the best of them and will have DA throwing him the ball most of the time. DA at least in my opinion can throw a good deep ball.

1-Kelvin Benjamin--Showed us that he is THAT guy for this team as a rookie even with defenses game-planning to minimize his impact.

2-Devin Funchess--Now that the draft shock has settled for fans/scouts a like I think by the end of camp through pre-season he will hold this spot down, especially given recent rookie success across the league at receiver.

3-Ted Ginn Jr.--Ginn is the deep threat, signed to a 2-year deal to avoid the ''revolving door'' that Gettleman mentioned in pressers at positions. More experience, speed, and cliched well with Cam in his previous season here.

4-Jarrett Boykin/Jericho Cotchery--IMO these receivers fill the same possession receiver role, Boykin is an inch taller, and has an edge in speed. The question is can he show enough to up-root a veteran, I think he can, but one of these two will not make the final 53. Edge to Boykin due to special teams role.

5-Corey Brown--Like many of you I watch/record/re-watch our games and honestly if we hadn't had the receiver corp re-make last off-season he wouldn't have mad the team with Smith, LaFell, Ginn, and Hixon still around. Many forget he originally stuck because we had ''0'' return options. he flashed, but he's a small, injury prone slot WR JAG, nothing special.

6-Stephen Hill--The team has invested a lot of time in this kid, and they seem high on him, I think he gets the opportunity to show what he brings to the table this season. Has the potential to take our offense to another level, while also maintaining the potential of a bust.

Practice Squad-

Damiere Bird-World Class speed, if he can add some weight to his 173 lb frame, he could be potential wise a very good slot WR given his speed, and quickness.

Marcus Lucas-Just still falls into the ''big men allow you to compete category.

Regarding Brown, most of his numbers came in 6 regular season games (5 of them after Avant was released). Once Avant was released, Brown provided a lift to the offense.  Based on that alone, he probably deserves to be moved up a few spots on that list.

That being said, the jury is still out on him of course as it is on all of our wide receivers.

Is Funchess experiencing raised expectations based on the success of Kelvin? It feels like we are hyping Devin in May when we hyped Kelvin in August.

I think Kelvin's numbers could go down this year. He caught many of his touchdowns late in games when we abandoned the run. He was often the only decent option in the passing game when Greg was on Left Tackle Coach duty.

Then again Kelvin showed up big time in Seattle.

I don't think the expectations that have been placed on Funch even come close to the amount of expectations that KB had.  KB had to come in and replace Smitty and be our number 1 as a rookie.

For Funchess....were just hoping even can come close to KB.

benji

funchess

ginn

brown

cotchery

boykin

if hill has gotten better (as in not sucking anymore) i would put him ahead of ginn. i'm not counting on that, tho.

tbh, there's only three receivers that matter and the rest are just role players.

benji/olsen/funchess.

anyone else is going to get minimal attention with a dozen or so receptions and a couple hundred yards at best with maybe 5 TDs between them.

meanwhile, the top three targets are going to get 750+ yards each and do most of the scoring.

As of right now, KB, Corey Brown, and Ginn all have the same amount experience in our system as Cotchery. A vet presence was much more important last season with NO ONE with a working knowledge of our system, but a year removed from this situation, I'm not sure what he brings to the team is needed or necessary anymore. The thing working against him is having so much youth on the team, that's what I think will hurt him because will Rivera be willing to cut Brown to keep a guy who legitimately only may have 1 year left in the tank, and at that, only productive enough to be a 3/4 reciever. I don't hate Cotch, and if he made the team, I'd be completely ok with it (unlike some others who really don't like that possibility), but I think his age really hurts him in this case.

his age doesn't hurt him at all. That's a fan perspective.

Possession receivers game doesn't fall off with age like speed receivers do.

There is no doubt cotchery had a down season last year, but there is no reason to believe that he can't bounce back from it, especially with more talent on the field around him.

The receiving core is still very young, and as much respect that I have for Ginn, he is not the vet leadership the ground needs.
