I hated the Mayo pick, but can't wait to see him "tag (some) fanny"

Dave Gettleman must love some Mayo, adding to an already arguably deep stable of quality linebackers as opposed to addressing another position of need.  But after reading the AP's Steve Reed's article, there's definitely enough depth to David Mayo to see why Gman drafted him.

If nothing else, David Mayo is driven. You can see it in in the way that he decided to take the road less traveled and earn a better scholarship while living in a basic shed, furnished with little more than a mattress, while attending community college in Cali. I guess there are worse places to further your education and play football than Santa Monica, but having the only electricity provided by an extension cord that you ran from your landlord's house, as well as no running water, would get quite old for most of us.  That being said, he met his objectives of earning the attention of a D1 school, went on to Texas State and made the impression that he knew he could make.  He bet on himself, and a man that bets on himself and wins is not a man that you likely won't to bet against.

GMs obviously knocked Mayo for playing in the Sun Belt Conference, but Mayo still showed up like a "boss" (the same word he referenced Luke Kuechly) by amassing  an amazing 154 tackles his last year at the school.  He had to be tagging a lot of fanny to get to that number, a lot of fanny indeed.

Mayo was obviously a men among boys, and even though I still believe that he'd have been available after the draft and would have signed with the Panthers, I guess Dave Gettleman didn't want to take any chances.  Mayo looks to be part of Gman's recipe for success.

I got on here the day David was drafted. I wished I had posted a lot more, earlier than I had because  I was appalled by the posts about a guy from Texas State that no one had heard of. I watched this kid play for 3 years and, sometimes, you just know talent. (yes, I've watched football for decades.) All schools, even "frakin' Texas Sate" have guys come along that you just know have a shot at the NFL. No, TXST hasn't had just ton of guys make it but we have 2, on current rosters (Texans, Falcons) that made their rosters as UDFAs. We had a guy that was a back-up DLineman for 8 years (Vikings) that didn't play in 2014. He wasn't a star but he played 8 years.

Every once in a while small schools have a star that makes it like: Wade Key, Reggie Rivers, Ricky Sanders and Darrick Vaughn. Sometimes they're roll players like Evans was.

Scouts have been watching Mayo all year. We had 23 scouts at our combine. Three years ago we had 5. The move to FBS does that for you.

Anyway, I do hope Mayo impresses more people than he disappoints.

(San Diego fans had a similar reaction to our CB that they took so you are not alone in your shock)

Don't worry about it. At the very least Mayo will be a decent to great special teamer. Texas State is a larger school than Appalachian State and they have several pros. The hudders sometimes forget that special teams is just as important as offense or defense and ours was atrocious last year. Shoring up the special teams will lead to extra wins. Gettleman made a point in FA to upgrade special teams and he made a point target it with our 5th round picks.

Welcome. I wouldn't worry about the huddle's line of thinking. Most everyone had their favorites so they threw a fit when he was picked. We'll treat him warmly from now on because he is a Panther. Thanks for sharing.

I feel better with him on the team. Not just special teams, but being Luke's backup. Cam's always had Derek Anderson to fill in, but Luke's had Chase Blackburn and Ben Jacobs. Those 2 can't do a decent job filling in. Now if Luke has to miss some time, our defense won't have a gaping hole in the middle.

I notice you stayed away from african americans on that one like the other two are not extremely offensive. Funny stuff. We could get those two and sign Peppers.

We have a white guy named Mayo on the roster. Q: What are the other major condiments? A: Ketchup and mustard.

Since mayo is white, what races are stereotyped as having yellow skin and red skin to match the white guy? That's where he was going with that. Try and keep up with the rest of the class.

We already had Salt and Pepper based on skin color, so don't get all pissy.

Welcome to the huddle. You'll have to forgive us; we don't get much in the way of Texas state football games or highlights here in the carolinas. I had no clue this guy existed, but after reading about what he's done and his nose for the ball, I've definitely changed my thinking on this guy. I know he'll contribute on special teams, but I bet he becomes the primary backup to keek.
