maybe this is a mr scot question

but they wanted shaq. last year they said if they didn't trade up for demarcus lawrence, they would have taken ealy and turner with their 2/3 picks.

they've also signed mackenzy bernadeau, tony fiammetta, dante rosario, dan connor, nick hayden, george selvie, terrell mcclain, and greg hardy in recent years... obviously all former panthers.

of course the only former cowboy i can think of that we've signed in the same time period is... josh thomas? and we went after alan ball. that's all i can think of.

i find this all very peculiar. there has to be some former panther scouts over there or something. or we hired old cowboy guys. i dunno. maybe they just have a weirdly similar philosophy to us...

Our offense is a coryell which is based off the one run in Dallas by Norv Turner when Jason Garret was a backup QB.

Our defense is a 4-3, similar to that run by Rod Marinelli in Dallas. Rod Marinelli coached defensive line while Ron Rivera was at Cal Berkley in the 80s. Rod Marinelli also coached defense in Tampa During the Tony Dungy/Lovie Smith era and of course Lovie worked with Ron in Chicago.Rod also worked with Lovie in Chicago.

So we are certainly in the market for the same types of personnel. 4-3 defenses are becoming less and less common. There might be a tie in the personnel department but there doesn't have to be either. It could be just a streak of FA signings with that corrects itself or we could just notice it more because the Cowboys are on TV all the time.

As far as the call Gettleman received... I'm guessing it came from Shaq or Shaq's agent. The Dallas Personnel department has no incentive to tip draft strategy on the first night.

During the draft I noticed the Giants chose several players the Panthers showed interest in. Flowers, Collins, and Diggyzua all got long looks from our organization but were picked by the Giants.

But just to go deeper because this topic interests me greatly. In 2014 Dave Gettleman switched the national scouting service from National to BLESTO. BLESTO stands for Bears, Lions, Eagles, Steelers Talent Organization. The way it works is every team that is part of the organization sends 1 scout (and they all send their least experienced scouts of course). And those scouts cover the entire nation and share their reports with other BLESTO Franchises.

So you might ask yourself "Would a scout withhold information for the benefit of the team that employs them?". Keep in mind these scouts are least experienced, lowest paid and they have incentive to submit the best work possible for all BLESTO franchises to see. The most successful BLESTO scouts get headhunted by other BLESTO franchises.

So to bring this back around the Cowboys and Panthers are both Blesto members meaning they share the scouting reports and have a chance to hire away good, young scouts from each other.

If you're curious what a former BLESTO scout looks like, head to training camp and look for the man with nipple shorts. http://www.carolinahuddle.com/boards/gettleboard/bupbup.mp3

So I wasn't the only one that noticed that.  I just thought it was the Giants tie the Gettleman has, and the philosophy.  Didn't know anything about this.  Thanks for the info.
