Six Teams not including us called for the Rams 41st pick

Recommended Posts

As Fisher, Snead and COO Kevin Demoff huddled in the team's crowded war room to affirm their strategy, assistant secondary coach Brandon Fisher gestured toward his father and explained, "He's thinking 'trade down,' because the board is talking to us. If you have a bunch of players who you basically rate the same, and you're happy to get any one of them, then moving down is the smart play."

If trading down was the call, seldom had a message rung so loudly and clearly in real time. About five seconds after the Rams were on the clock for the 41st overall selection, the Kansas City Chiefs called with an offer -- and five other teams followed suit shortly thereafter. After a furious, five-and-a-half minute stretch of constant communication, Fisher, Snead and Demoff finalized a deal with the Carolina Panthers, moving down 16 spots in the second round while snagging extra picks in the third and sixth rounds.

From another Michael Silver article, the teams listed...

The Chiefs, Eagles, Texans, Steelers and Panthers all offered trade-down prospects, and the Cowboys called to gauge the market before bowing out. With four-and-a-half minutes on the clock, Fisher chose the Panthers' deal. The Rams got Carolina's second-round pick (57th overall), along with selections in the third and sixth round, and hoped one of the linemen they liked would last another 16 spots.

Who those other five teams ultimately took in Round Two (with Funchess already gone, of course)

Texans (Pick 43) LB Benardrick McKinney

Eagles (Pick 47) CB Eric Rowe

Chiefs (pick 49) OG Mitch Morse

Steelers (Pick 56) CB Senquez Golson

Cowboys (Pick 60) OLB Randy Gregory

No way to know who all of them were targeting, but it's pretty easy to imagine that the Chiefs, Eagles and Texans all could have coveted Funchess.

And yeah, rumors have linked both the Falcons and the Saints (who picked at 42 and 44 respectively) to Funchess.

Supposedly both the Saints and Falcons wanted Funchess.

Dave was kinda trolling the Falcons in his press conference when he was like "Did you see the Falcons take a cornerback after we made that pick?"  hahah so funny our GM is awesome.

The Eagles and the Texans still traded up after they couldn't get the 41st pick.

The Eagles traded up with the Dolphins, moving from the 52nd to the 47th pick to draft Eric Rowe (CB, Utah). They gave up the 52nd and both their fifth-round picks (145 and 156) to the Dolphins in exchange for the 47th and the Dolphins sixth-round pick (191).

The Texans traded up with the Browns to the 43rd pick from the 51st to draft Benardrick McKinney (LB, Miss. St.). They gave up the 51st and their fourth-round (116) and sixth-round (195) picks to the Browns in exchange for the 43rd pick and the Browns seventh-round pick (229).

Looks like Gettleman may have won the battle for the 41st pick because he didn't care about getting back another late round pick as the Eagles and Texans did in their trade ups in the second round. Consistent with everything he's said and has been widely discussed regarding roster spots and his willingness to give up picks this year.

Everyone trying to jump the Falcons for Funchess.

Roddy is getting up there in age, and with the cap like it is, they could cut him after this season and save 3 million.

Would have been a good replacement for them.

Screw you Falcons.
