Mike Shula

I mean maybe at one point he was an OC Mastermind? Maybe? Lets be honest though, Ive been watching the Panthers More since 2010 ish. Almost every game I watch, It is Run Run Pass, Run Run Pass Punt, or Run Run Pass FG. First Play usually always goes to Cams Right, Next Play is Usually a Reverse, and then there is the incomplete Short pass.

Shula has potential to be good, he just needs to stop playing conservative same thing applys to ron. We need riverboat ron

I think people give this guy too much poo. He had been working with a limited offense, and a stellar defense. He isn't going to force plays when his defense is allowing him to win games.

His line was bad, his receivers were iffy, and his quarterback was injured. Of course you are going to call shorter pass plays, and more runs. It only makes sense.

When Rivera was talking in his last press conference, he harped on how these new draft picks allowed them to do things differently, schematically, on both offense and defense.

So, please, stop the circlejerk. The guy did what he could with the resources he had, while accepting that his defense was the way to win.

I said the same thing in another thread. I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt, anxious to see what he does with the new weapons he has.

people always blamed shula for the offensive struggles when he didn't call a bad play , its just that we had a bad run game and a horrible oline now all of that is fixed

I'm not fanboying him by any means, but come on. We gotta give this guy a fair shot, right? He was our QB coach when Cam put up those fantastic numbers, and its really nice when your coordinator understands your limits and flaws.

I think it's easier to forget some of those mind numbing play calls in the offseason.

Regardless, he's here whether people like it or not. But we've definitely added some help to our offense this year, he has no excuses.

2013 - Schula/Cam executed a very good offense. If you just want your fantasy stats, Detroit is your team. This team was top-10 pts and TDs per drive for the season and that was after Smitty got hurt in the final few games where the offense really did come to a crawl. (and people forget that the Panthers played the NFC West who had 3 top-10 defenses: SEA, SFran, & ARI) Before that I think they were top 5. (up there with San Diego, Seahawks, Broncos, & NO). And yes, the 2013 Panther offense was better than the Andrew Luck Colts offense.

2014 - We saw what happened last year with poo as Oline.

2015 - Schula needs to continue the 2013 successes. But he does have issues with generating fast paced drives on a consistent basis.

I think Shula, and the staff in general, came to an agreement that generating fast paced drives, with an inconsistent offense, with limited talent..... Was not the way to approach the game. We have a great defense. We want to keep them fresh. We want to have time of possession... And that's exactly what he did. I think some people don't fully grasp the entire gameplan they have going in. I'm not saying he hasn't made mistakes, but I think he purposely tried to have a methodical offense... And those bombs on third down.... That's when the defense is least expecting it. It keeps them honest, even if it doesn't work.

I remember watching the Saints, and people call Sean Payton a genius when he goes for these gutsy calls, and third down bombs... I remember Belichick throwing on fourth and short a few years back in the play offs, instead of punting the ball... And they didn't make it. They lost the game. He got a lot of poo. Others would say, the defense was bad, he was playing to his strengths and weaknesses. It's just one of those things. If it doesn't work, you're an idiot... But if it does, you are brilliant and lauded.... Shula didn't have much talent on offense. And to those people referencing other teams he has been on, please look at the circumstances. You are just throwing out stats, as if it paints the whole picture. Let's see how he does this season. I don't think he will be around for much longer if we aren't in the top half of the league in offense/winning games. One or the other has to happen.

Last year Shula had that awful, revamped Oline and new receiver core to blame on his lack of success. This year, turner and Norwell are returning with a year of good experience under their belt. Bell is gone, and we traded up to get a RT good enough to replace Remmers. We got Ginn back, Funchess should be a legit option, and I have to think the running back position is improved with such a bad string of injuries behind us and a newly drafted RB.

With all the improvements we have made, the offseason pick ups and draft picks, and Cam playing in a contract year, if Shula doesn't have a top 10 offense, he deserves to be gone. If we have a top 10 offense, hey, many of us were wrong and we got what we ultimately want anyway. If after all this off season has done, we don't have a top 10 offense, then Rivera needs to man up and admit that we need change. I admire his loyalty to his guys, but there's a point where enough is enough.
