When we get a good OC, people are going to be like WTF was I thinking hoping we'd keep Shula?!?!

I think people give this guy too much poo. He had been working with a limited offense, and a stellar defense. He isn't going to force plays when his defense is allowing him to win games.

His line was bad, his receivers were iffy, and his quarterback was injured. Of course you are going to call shorter pass plays, and more runs. It only makes sense.

When Rivera was talking in his last press conference, he harped on how these new draft picks allowed them to do things differently, schematically, on both offense and defense.

So, please, stop the circlejerk. The guy did what he could with the resources he had, while accepting that his defense was the way to win.

 

There are 2 things Shula does consistently.

 

1. Uses his key players as decoys in the first half of games relying on 3rd team players to keep drives alive.

 

2. Runs 15 play drives eating up 10 minutes in the late 3rd quarter while trailing by 10 or more points.

 

Once he stops doing those 2 things, then I will give him a break.

Throwing downfield on 3rd and short is a good time to get 1 on 1 matchups and get a big play or long TD.

Second, throwing downfield on 3rd and short is likely a QB decision, not an OC. And throwing downfield on 3rd and short does not mean it was a bad QB decision

For instance, I remember one play against I think Philadelphia.

It was 3rd (or maybe 4th) and short and Cotchery ended up one on one with a DE or OLB (Barwin maybe?) on a wheel like route.

9/10 times you expect a WR to blow by that guy. Cam didn't throw a great ball and Cotchery didn't do a good enough job beating his man so it was incomplete.

Everybody was mad at Shula. But they had the match up they wanted, and it was a good decision by Cam. It just didn't work out, and players didn't execute.

1) Yes it is a great time to get a 1 on 1 match up. However, most of them are still going to be a very low percentage play. I do not mind sending a guy deep, but only throw to him if he severely beat his defender and is wide open. 

 

2) Its the OC's job to tell the QB that the deep ball is only their for the above ie if by chance the WR really beats his man bad and is wide open. Otherwise take the easier higher percentage play.

had last year been the only year he had bad limited production from his offense, i might be inclined to believe.

 

his offenses have always been bad, though. he hasn't grown like many thought he would have after two other failed attempts as a play caller.

 

with shula running the offense, you have to have a dominant defense that can keep the other team from scoring because his sure isn't.

I can't pretend that Cam is marginally accurate on the deep ball, so in 3rd and short I want the ball in his hands to get the yard or less. That is the gift he has and the advantage the Panthers have just by having Cam under center.

I think our offense looks like the bears from last year. Two huge wr. A big te. One premium back. Only thing is we have a better qb. If trestman came over as out oc I think we would put up huge numbers because he would have it where the qb doesn't throw 8 picks a game

If you play zone there will always be holes. 

 

If you play man simple drags, slants, rubs, and out routes are effective. 

 

There is no way around it, unless wide open, the bombs down field are some of the lowest % plays in football.
