Look, I really think that he sucks, but being the reasonable fan that I am, I am going to give him the benefit of the doubt.  This year is his last opportunity though.  He is at a crossroads and his time is now.  For his sake, the team's, and the sake of peace in the Huddle,   I truly hope that he succeeds like panthers55 (among others) thinks that he can.

I think people give this guy too much poo. He had been working with a limited offense, and a stellar defense. He isn't going to force plays when his defense is allowing him to win games.

His line was bad, his receivers were iffy, and his quarterback was injured. Of course you are going to call shorter pass plays, and more runs. It only makes sense.

When Rivera was talking in his last press conference, he harped on how these new draft picks allowed them to do things differently, schematically, on both offense and defense.

So, please, stop the circlejerk. The guy did what he could with the resources he had, while accepting that his defense was the way to win.

 

Bro, Shula has NEVER produced a good offense. At some point you have to stop with the excuses. 

 

Chud had a top 10 offense with roughly the same team. 

 

I will be so glad after this season when (hopefully) people can just stop with all the excuses. 

 

Shula is AT VERY BEST and average playcaller. Which I hope is not what Carolina is about.

2013: 26th ranked offense (Yd)

Extremely misleading "stat."

We led the NFL in time of possession, were efficient in the red zone, and had (4) 4th Q game-winning drives. Oh, and we had the #14 scoring defense in AFL/NFL history.

It worked masterfully.

If Chud was the OC in 2013 we would've had a "top 5 offense" (yardage ranking) and Cam would've been an MVP candidate. But the defense would've finished about 15th or so and we would've went about 8-8 because Chud's Madden offense would've aired out quick TD drives or a 3 & out 99% of the time & ran our defense into the ground.

Keep the yards, I'll take the wins.

 

Time of possession doesnt mean poo by itself. You can hold the ball the entire quarter but get down to the opponents redzone and have to kick a fg. 

 

The only thing that matters is real efficiency. Points per possession. 

 

So long as you score a TD I do not care if it takes 30 seconds or 10 minutes. 

 

Our wins the last couple of years have came as a result of our D, not the O. 

 

I have seriously lost count of how many 3rd and short plays where we call up a play 30 yards downfield. Should tell you all you need to know about Shula.

The fact that Shula has been an offensive coordinator for 6 years and still not had a team accidentally finish in the top half of the league in yards per game or scores per game is very telling.

I don't care about Shula's "track record" at Alabama & Tampa Bay. Those were both suicidal jobs. There isn't an offensive coach in hIstory that would've succeeded in those situations. Alabama was serving massive sanctions & had enormous talent deficiencies when he was the HC & Tampa Bay had no QB & arguably the worst offensive talent in the league when he was their OC.

We had the #16 offense last year with a broken QB, only 1 legitimate WR, and the worst offensive line I've ever seen. And we won the division & a playoff game.

In 2013, when he had good personnel, Carolina was at the top of the league in time of possession and red zone efficiency. And we won the division.

Now with a decent (& huge, nasty) offensive line, a healthy Cam, Stewart/Tolbet, Olsen, & massive WRs, Shula has a legit offense to work with. And it's built perfectly for his style.

For the first time, probably ever, Shula has a talented offense that is built for his style. This is the first year where he should actually succeed.

And I have a feeling the offense is gonna be very, very good and people are either gonna A) be pissed or B,) give all credit to Cam.

I'm not the biggest fan of Shula, particularly the methodical run first offense, but it's the perfect compliment to our elite defense & he's done a great job with the players he's been given the past 2 years.

Lol at having any faith in Shula. I could understand if he has produced at some point in his past but he has NEVER produced a good offense.

Something else to consider when looking at his history..since he's been OC here, we haven't missed the playoffs.

I will say that I have gone through phases where I have hated him.. When our offense is on, he looks good. But I still think the offense needs to get fixed before we are ready to make a deep playoff run. They are what's holding us back. Our lack of offensive talent is what has kept me from completely writing him off though.
