Boone DT

there were no available options until now.

they were looking but no one is going to be getting rid of DTs until time for cut down the rosters.

last year they had time. they went into the offseason with a plan to get bigger on the line.

this year they had something happen that couldn't have been expected all that much. your big NT goes down you don't find those guys lying around all over the place. you don'[t even see DTs lying around those guys are at a premium much more than OGs.

kemo's achilles is what screwed us.

if you think they should have prepared better, probably but they had other places to shore up as well. no NT or DT that was going to be available where we were picking was going to be starting anyway. they fixed what the could with the best available options and hoped that the areas that didn't get addressed would be fine until they could get a good solution there as well.

if they had addressed DT or tried to get a big NT (which would have cost a whole lot more than we could have afforded thanks to fat albert) then something else would have been broken and everyone would be whining about how they screwed the pooch with that one.

something is going to break. you do the best you can to prepare for each potential break but you can't fix everything that isn't broken yet. there was no reason to think that kemo was going to go down.

we needed a DE in case we couldn't get peppers back. (brown)

we needed help at DT (corvey irvin to replace an old damione lewis and we also got several big UDFAs)

we needed depth on the OL. (robinson)

we needed help in the secondary, esp. at CB. (martin and munnerlynn)

we needed someone to help in case we lost an aging hoover. (in case you haven't noticed FB is vital to the running game here).(fiammetta)

we needed better options for returners after losing mark jones (munnerlynn and goodson)

we needed another option for jake to throw to (goodson, remember they first talked to him about playing slot receiver)

the offseason didn't play out like they expected. oh well.

you deal with the hand that is dealt you. that is what they did and what they are doing.

Going into this off-season I guarantee you almost every single poster on this forum knew we were way to thin at DT. When Kemo was out last year we were destroyed on the ground.

I saw the writing on the wall when they slapped the tag on pep an how it would derail my hopes at getting quality depth like Brenard and Canty. I was one of the few who was willing to take just about whatever was being offered for Pep if nothing more then to get his salary off the books.

But as soon as Kemo went down we should have cut a few Salley type players and signed the best run-stuffer or two available. If nothing else it brings in quality competition to the guys who we already had. Which in hindsight they were just dumb to expect a guy who had actually lost 15 pounds in the off-season to try and replace a 350 lbs monster.

This could have been avoided if the FO had just done things differently.

Lewis

Leonard

Boone

Favorite

Hayden

Irvin

Assuming we sign Boone, I wonder who the odd man (or two men) will be out. I'm assuming Favorite will be the first to be cut of the new core six and then Hayden. Then they'll go with Lewis/Leonard/Boone/Irvin.

I wouldn't be completely shocked if Corvey Irvin doesn't make the team though.

being thin at DT was no secret. here is the problem...do you look at replacing the older DT or the bigger one....or get the best available option?

i'm not going to talk about the pep situation. the team didn't screw us. the situation did. they weren't going to let him go so complaining about that is futile.

when kemo went down, there were no big DTs available. teams stock up on those guys like crazy because they are so rare. if you have a big guy on a roster and there is even a sliver of a chance that he could be worth a roster spot you don't let him go until you are forced to.

the first opportunity we were going to have at a DT that was worth a roster spot was when the first round of cuts came.
