Cotchery's Situation

Not really. Brown had 296 receiving yards and 2 TDs last year despite injuries and barely getting an opportunity to play. Stephen Hill was a starter and barely eclipsed those numbers despite not having guys like Benjamin and Olsen on the field with him.

Although I'm REALLY not sure why what you said was supposed to matter in regards to what I said. Is him doing more than Bersin supposed to mean anything? Bersin sucks too.

Who was his quarterback?

Stephen Hill (as a rookie) played in 11 games and had 21 catches for 252 yards on 47 targets.

Philly Brown (as a rookie)  played in 13 games and had 21 catches for 296 yards on 36 targets.

Stephen was counted on for more, and frankly, was not ready.  However, since expectations were higher for him, he was considered a disappointment while Brown is considered a gem.

While comparing WR stats, I think it is fair to consider who was covering Hill vs. who covered Brown.  Hill faced better CBs than Brown, FWIW.  We can also assume that Brown had the better QB.

If you throw out Hill for sucking, then you need to explain why Brown doesn't.

I keep hearing people say we will keep Cotchery because he brings experience and a veteran presence. Well wouldn't Ginn and Boykin count as vets with experience? So basically Boykin is probably going to be a better WR option and he can play special teams so he should have a better shot of making the team than Cotchery. Ginn is a return specialist and offers speed. Philly now has a year under his belt and has returned punts, maybe not well but he does have the exp. and has speed and shows a lot of potential.

Our WR coach has been a good WR in the NFL, multiple superbowls and has lots of experience so why would we need to rely on Cotchery for his experience when we have better players and we have a coach who can offer the same without taking up a roster spot?

I am doubting that they keep Cotchery to do anything except produce as a player, but his leadership is something they value.  Developing Funchess will be left to the coaches for the most part.

Here are some statements that are sure to ruffle some feathers:

Cotchery will make the team and will participate in the offense.  Proehl can teach a slowing vet how to remain effective.  Cotchery came here from Pittsburgh, where the QB-WR chemistry was strong.  He really didn't have time to develop it last year due to Cam's injury.

Bersin probably won't make the roster, but he is not as bad as everyone here thinks.  He has some good hands and runs good routes.  I think he needs confidence more than anything.  If you are judging him based on his punt returns last year, stop.  That is not what he is and he will never be that again.  I see him with as good a shot of making the team as Boykin or Hill.

I am not certain our WRs will always be 1, 2, 3, etc.  I think we will have different groups based on the situation.  For example, at #3 and #4, imagine we brought in Hill and Ginn to stretch the defense deep. In another situation, like goal line, imagine Funchess, Benjamin, Hill, and Bersin--all over 6'3" to go along with Olsen.  You could have the fast set, with Funchess at #1, Ginn at #2, and Brown at #3.   I think that is what we are looking to do this year--present matchup problems on defense and on offense.

thank you for finally being the first person to not demand that somehow a set of differently talented WR have to play a very specific role every single play in every type of situation.

This team did a ton of that the last few years.  The X (Benjamin, before that Smith) stayed somewhat isolated in 1x3 sets or occasionally they'd throw someone in there with him as 2x2 sets, but within that, there's no speciflc "this player is the slot player" type of convention.  Part of that particular spread concept is to bunch away this idea of "this player is the slot, this player is the outside guy" type of 1, 2, 3 BS, along with the concept that many top WR aren't inside or outside players all the time.

Coaches love cotch but he's nothing more of a possession wr. If we keep him it is because he made some nice 3rd down catches but I would much rather have a younger player like Boykin who has more upside then an older wr like cotch. I want cotch cut but then again idk if its going to happen

Where did I say anything about how good Brown is/isn't?

It's his to lose..may the best player win.. I am not about pissin all over a player before season begins.. he is there to teach and I remember him havin a few big catches last year..he was not brought in to be Calvin Johnson!.. He was brought in to teach the younger wr's and make catches and fill a void.. so let the games begin

You didn't, but the YOU was not meant literally.  As a fan, why would you (meaning a person) say Hill sucks and not include Brown?  My point was this--as a fan base, Brown is generally considered a diamond in the rough, a bright spot, our slot WR,  Hill, a player with more upside, is largely considered a bust when he had the same numbers as a rookie in a tougher environment for WRs.  It has been 2 years since he was on the field, but you have declared that Hill sucks--

He is 24 and has been getting coached up.  The immediate pressure taken off him.  How do you know he sucks?  What are you basing it on?  2013 with a crappy qb on a crappy team?

You are a bit sensitive about semantics, but I will give you this one.  I did say YOU.  You are entitled to your opinions, but man, I hope you are wrong about Hill.  I think you do to.
