Cotchery's Situation

Already been said here, but Cotchery wasn't brought on for his fantastic wide receivering skills.  Those abandoned him a few years ago.  He was brought on because he's dependable, a leader, and the consummate professional. That's the kind of guy I'd like to have around on a team with several young Wide Receivers of the future.

We don't NEED Cotchery. WE HAVE RICKY PROHL!!!

yeah... I think a lot of folks are overvaluing Cotch's veteran presence, especially when throwing Proehl into the mix.  I don't think that Proehl is some kind of receiver's coach savior like a lot of people do on here, but he is a hardly-removed-from-the-NFL receiver.  everything he brings to the table is the same as what a 'vet presence' brings outside of being able to line up next to a guy

He was credited with 48 catches and one drop last season, so if he looks good in camp I think he'll be hard to bump off the roster. If he plays well and still gets cut, I guess that means we're in good shape at the WR position.

Well said!  I like it.  Nice problem to have..., potentially too many promising wideouts!

He's done more in his career than Bersin and Brown

Not really.  Brown had 296 receiving yards and 2 TDs last year despite injuries and barely getting an opportunity to play.  Stephen Hill was a starter and barely eclipsed those numbers despite not having guys like Benjamin and Olsen on the field with him.

Although I'm REALLY not sure why what you said was supposed to matter in regards to what I said.  Is him doing more than Bersin supposed to mean anything?  Bersin sucks too.

One thing I forgot to mention that I haven't seen is that Funchess can play it all from what we've heard.

It makes me think there are situations where we have KB/Cotchery outside, Devin in the slot. May not need the speedy guys in goal line situations. So maybe we move back and forth with the best suitable counterparts depending on where Funchess is and when.

I was thinking the same thing. I suspect we will use Devin much like NO used Graham. By having him in the slot, we could quickly go from a 3 WR set to a 2 TE set in seconds.

Proehl says he has been working hard, so anyone who pretends to know how good he is right now is lying.

He sucks.  He will be lucky to make the 53 man roster.

The NFL is full of players who work extremely hard.  It isn't some unique trait that Hill owns.  His hands suck just like they did in college.  He is not nearly as fast on the field as some of you seem to think he is because of his 40 time.  He can't run routes.  His change of direction sucks.

Could he turn into a half decent receiver?  Maybe, but only in the same token that Clausen could turn into a half decent QB.  Anything can happen.  I'm just pretty dang sure it won't happen.

You are probably right, but there are some things you ignored, either intentionally, or not.

First, WRs often take time to develop.  If you base your proclamation on his 2 years with the Jets, you might arrive at the conclusion, he sucks.  Tell me, would you have said the same thing about Greg Hardy and Charles Johnson after 2 years?  Dez Bryant?  Probably, albeit to a lesser degree.

The NFL is full of players who work hard, but do they have Stephen Hill's God-given gifts?   In most cases, No.

Can game speed, route running, and change of direction (all 3 almost the same thing in this case) be improved with practice (see "hard work" comments)?  Yes.

Of course, you are probably right, but you have to remember what we sacrificed to get him.  If the league-wide perception of him was that he is good, he never would have stayed on our PS.  So anyone stating anything positive about Hill have to be counting on the improvement of the things you mention.  The last time you saw him play was 2012 or 2013, and a lot of development can happen in 2 years.
